Well, DUH!!
I read the destructions and knew to go to idle before engaging the PTO on my B3350. What I didn't realize is that the *speed* with which the PTO handle is lowered also affects the way the clutch operates. If you just dump the handle down, as I was doing, the engagement is abrupt and this is rather apparent when using a rear brush cutter. Lower the handle a bit more gently and things smooth out significantly, just like the clutch on a manual tranny.
I have no idea why sometimes the simplest things escape me :c)
