Kubota 5100

I have a friend that is close to buying a Kubota MX 5100 4wd. It has 75 hours on it and a frontend loader. My question is about the rubber boots on the steering cylinders.... they ar both cracked open. The previous owner said it was from bush hogging - totally believable - and the kubota dealer said it was no reason to replace them. Does this sound correct? Just wondering

I have a MX5100 and my boots are also off. I have put them backl on multiple times but they seem to continually come off. Doesn't seem to affect anything though

Eventually enough grit will get into the ball joint to cause some damage and you'll need to replace it. I tore one years ago and replaced the boot (my tractor has the same front axle setup as the MX models)... since then I try to be careful with it, but when you're mowing in tall, woody growth, it's easy catching something when you turn. It helps to leave the loader bucket on and about a foot off the ground when mowing in that kind of stuff. Also protects the axle from stumps, rocks, etc.

I have had that happen and they are easy to replace, there is a thread on here somewhere in addition to someone who made guards for them, but I have known people to run them for years with the boots torn off.

I can only speak from my observations and that is in areas where the boots on our L5740 are getting knocked around by brush, weeds etc., the height of the M8540 keeps them above more of it. How a person uses it is important also as while driving straight, the boots are protected, only when turning fairly sharp do they become exposed. I now avoid sharp turns while in heavy brush.
