Greetings all and happy new year. I got way more involved in a project than i should be, and would like to know if anyone knows if the charging system will work if only 5 magnets are there? I don't want replace the flywheel (which includes the magnets that i am told are not available separately) as I will not use this very much, and I already am really sick of sinking time and money into it, and just wish I told myself not to worry that it is not charging. I should have just accepted manually charging the battery before and after each use. the engine is a horizontal shaft kohler 23hp engine. I know i will need a new stator. somehow this was producing about 22a/c volts at the regulator even like this. anyone have any experience/ expertise on this? I have not yet removed all the fragments/ cleaned it. Thank you for you time.

The missing magnet would unbalance the flywheel and cause excessive vibration.

Not sure how it would effect the charging capacity though.

I can not argue that, but I did not notice any running issues at all, until the battery barely started the engine. for the limited use the engine will see, I am not too concerned about any unbalance issues, just more the charging. as in would installing a new stator just be a waste of money, or would it actually charge.

It won't charge. I have seen those engines with all the magnets stuck to the stator and still put out decent voltage, but the amps will not be there. May try some of your local mower shops, they may have a junk engine out back that the flywheel is good on.

If it wasn't worth anymore $$ or time, remove the stator and magnets- maintain with a charger.
If, for some reason you do decide to fix this- see if the ignition system replacement kit includes the flywheel. Kohler used several different ignition systems. When ASAM ignition went away, you could buy the whole ignition kit that came with the flywheel for less than just the flywheel. YMMV. Of course, you'd still need the stator too.

$80 will get a flywheel off ebay.

Thank you, but unfortunately the ones I have seen for under $100 do not include the holes drilled & tapped for my engine's fan blades. and apparently there are different shaft sizes and/or keyway orientation to consider (according to an ebay seller that wants to ensure proper fitment/ prevent returns) the ones i am seeing that appear correct are almost twice that.

thank you! I had just noticed that, and if I end up replacing the flywheel, I will likely go that way. the best ebay price for a used (correct) flywheel was around $140-150 and only $20 more will get me the kit, so it would be a no-brainer if I were to replace.
