Knock in Diesel Engine

I Would like buy 1955 Ford Diesel Tractor. Has solid knock in engine as if hitting tin. How can i check this with out pulling the complete engine? The Crankshaft Pully seems to be off balance, but tight and secure.

I know nothing of a 1955 ford diesel. That said, most harmonic balancers are mounted on the crankshaft pulley via rubber between them. Being that old the rubber my have deterated hence your pulley wobel and a likely source of the noise you hear. The good news is shouldn't be too bad to fix.

Don't know what the sumps are made of on those but if they are steel it could have a dent in it with the crank hitting it. I have had this experience with a car.
If you put your hand on the sump with the motor running you could feel it hitting.
