King Kutter blade bolts tack welded?

I just purchased a used king kutter 6' bush hog (Blue). When i looked at the bolts that hold the blades on it looks like someone (the dealer?) put a small tack weld on the nut (to the bolt). Is this normal?? What do I do when i need to replace them?? I don't believe that the owner I got the mower from did it. It was either the dealer or the company.

Cut off wheel or grinder. Some people torque stuff way to tight and you need a torch. Better then having a blade come off and cut a back tire. Or worse.

The only way to get a cut-off wheel or grinder on the nut is to remove the whole stump jumper. There's a hole in the deck of the KK that allows you to put a socket on the nut, but you can't get a grinding wheel in there. If the tack weld isn't too big, you might break it with a coal chisel, but my guess is you will have to remove the whole stump jumper with the blades attached and cut the bolt. TSC has blade bolt sets for the KK cutters, so they are pretty easy to find. Alternatively, you might be able to use a torch to cut the nut free and chisel it off from the topside, but I'd bet you won't do that without bubbling the paint on your cutter's deck.

I was out mowing one day with my new KK mower. After doing about 5 acres, I quit and was heading to the house. As I drove down the road with the PTO disengaged and the mower riding on it's tailwheel, I heard a clanking and looked back to see one blade and a bolt with no nut laying in the road. Evidently the nut had worked loose and fallen off while I was mowing, but the blade stayed in place due to centrifugal force and didn't drop off until I was on the road. I figured it was my lucky day and bought a lottery ticket, but I wasn't THAT lucky.:laughing:

I bet a rotary bur / mill or stone on a die grinder would cut that tack weld out.

I used a couple different metal cutting burs on a die grinder.. they were 1/4" and 3/8" and the die grinder was a long neck one.. used it to do some work on some welded nuts/keepers on some power adjust rims I had. had to cut the tack welds out to get them apart...

to the OP.. it goes without saying.. but I would replace both bolts and nuts when you do repalce the blades..e tc.
