Keweenaw snow photos

Somewhere I have an old photo (before smartphones and digital cameras) of using a walk behind 2 stage snow blower to clear off my folks roof in the UP My dad drove it up on the roof using a huge snowdrift.
Back in 1978 we had a blizzard. I remember my dad getting a ladder and us shoveling off the roof. When we were done, we stepped off the roof onto the snow. Didn't need the ladder. That's the only time I've seen snow that deep here. It was quit a fun winter.

Moving it to the center is the usual way to do it as you describe. In the photo I posted, they are clearing snow storage area (ak side of the street) and as you can see, is getting full. They either blow it elsewhere or into a dump truck and move it to a snow storage area.

The few times we get heavy snow (not very often anymore) in town, they'd use front end loaders and contractors to load into dump trucks and take to city parks to dump. They used to dump it in the river, but EPA said stop because of pollution. So now it goes into the park parking lots, which all drain slowly to city sewage plant for treatment.

Anyhow, it's neat to see how heavy snow areas handle it.

Ski photos taken today. We have somewhere between 2 and 3ft on the ground now. (y)

The layers you see in these two photos are individual snow falls.

Wally was told to get on the log, that's across the creek in a little canyon.

Some business who have larger, flatter roofs leave a blower on there roof. I never think to get photo of someone doing that...... 😳

With the age of a lot of buildings up there having a flat roof without clearing it off is a death sentence for the building. When I built my cabin up there I designed it with a 10 pitch metal roof entry door and deck on the gable end. Snow still accumulates, and when it falls off sounds like a freight train. Here's what can happen if you don't clean your roof.

Wasn't that the same year the Negaunee Schools' bus garage collapsed and damaged a bunch of busses?

Probably, they got hammered we went up there to ride during tail end of storm. snowmobiles trail groomers were stuck on the trails, I think I posted a picture of a road grader with chains buried, and had to be pulled out with an excavator. We were running 2" lug long tracks and would hit a drift going to slow we'd get buried one sled we were riding with was a newer stock 137" renegade and was pretty much useless. Buddy had to unload snowmobiles a mile from my cabin just to get in. If you like riding off trail it was awesome!

Baraga/ Marquette county down old logging roads and two tracks. There's miles of seasonal unplowed roads up there also. If there posted no trespassing or gated we don't. I've trail rode a lot up by the keewanaw and there's a lot more private/posted land imo.
