Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

What I found once I built a truck several months ago is that you no longer are able to order it. Rather, they will "find you something nearby."
Their offerings may or may not be close to what you are looking for. If you asked for a extended cab 6 cyl 4x4 it'll give you both body styles, 4 as well as 6 cylinder, and certainly no regard to color or other options you chose.
That's not exclusive to Nissan, they all do it. It's pretty much a waste of time.

Had this often… but if timing is right and willing to wait a factory order is the way to go.

Last factory order was Super Duty F250 and before a factory delivery BMW and prior factory order and build watch 2001 Corolla S.

Was able to see Corolla being made which for a car person is a great experience.

The Super Duty was the easiest… dealer said special orders are almost all trucks.

Tge BMW was hard… 5 dealers did everything to have me buy off the lot… they did not understand I needed a car in Germany!

How much more power did the diesel have than the standard 4 banger? I wouldn't wish a chevette with the gas 4 on anyone. I drove my sisters going up and down the hills on I30 in Arkansas when was 19 or so. I had to get up to 75 plus going down the hill or I would hit 40 going up the next one. Never again.

To be fair, nobody else's 4 banger econoboxes of that era were much better. I traveled a lot for my job in the 70s/80s and drove a LOT of rental cars, few impressed me much.

So, I guess a better way to say it "How cheap would an absolutely bare bones truck have to be for You to actually buy it new, right now".

What i mean, lets say, a Ford Ranger/S10 type truck, 2.2L Na, 85hp/100ft lbs; vinyl bench, crank windows, AM radio, no cruise, stick or auto; 1 cup holder (maybe), 2 wd. If that was on the dealer lots, for $25k; you buying? What about $20k? (Modeling of a 1995 Dakota i had)

You lost me with 2WD, where I live 4WD is a must. A wimpy 85 hp engine isn't gonna cut it either. Other than that, I'd be fine with it. Well, nothing worth listening to on AM anymore, so I'd want a stereo that could play from a flashdrive.

OTOH, I've kind of gotten spoiled by my Colorado. Some of the features I never use...heated seats/steering wheel, appleplay, Sirius, Onstar, etc. It's just old enough (2019) where the infotainment screen hasn't taken over the dash.

Is that 4wd? I am pondering an upgrade, and Nissan seems to be the only mid sized left with a V-6.
Or an extended vs double cab

That's kinda my point. Even if we upgrade from the base model, 1990 S10, to the 4wd; MSRP is $12,830. Without AC, thats a tough sell, even at 1990 price. BTW, I was wrong, the 1990 S10 had 94 hp...

It looks like the 90 model did come with ABS standard, and Power steering; but even an AM radio was an optional upgrade


BTW; if we just run straight Gov inflation, thats $30,838 in 2024 USD; and we gained over 200 hp, AC, radio, air bags, cruise control, cloth seats, power windows, back up cameras, in our Nissan. We also very very likely reduced our maintenance costs, gained fuel economy (i assume), ect

Edit: we went from 19 mpg hwy with our 94hp S10 to 21 mph hwy with our 310 hp Frontier

Im running Nissian vs, because I think they are the closest to a "base" truck available at this current time; not cause I love nissian (im neutral).

I agree, maybe when the Colorado name badge was first introduced it MIGHT have been a closer comparison between them but now days the Colorado I a WAY bigger truck than the S10 ever was. BTW I had two S series trucks and loved them both for light hauling and as my daily drivers.

I had a 1991 S10 V6 long bed with A/C, stereo but 2wd.

It was a pretty good truck but did have repairs… the cluster started having problems at 28,000 miles and later had to replace sending unit and fuel pump… rode nice but the mpg was very close to my 5.7 91 Silverado.

As I could not trust the instrument cluster I added a mechanical temp gauge which was spot on and verified the truck never overheated.

A guy I worked with drove a diesel Rabbit until he just wore it slap out, unbelievable mpg and he drove it hard. Just like a Timex it kept on tickin

I had a 79 diesel rabbit, routinely got 50+mpg around town, occasionally 65 on long trips.

So Toyoda pricing here (relatively) doesn't look that bad..... what limits them is Towing. I was surprised that the Sequoia has a higher tow-rating than the Tundra now, by about 800# in the model I'd pick. Tundra is a tick over 8000#, which is plenty for many personal-use applications, but obviously not tri-axle floats, loaded anyway....

I don't know about the "Toyoda" but the Toyota Tundra can be rated for over 10K, which I consider a decent tick over 8,000 lbs.
