I am looking at a 2002 John Deere 790. The owner says it is a 30 HP tractor. John Deere web site says it is a 27HP engine. On other web sites they say what the owner is saying that the 790 is 30 HP. I was wondering if back in 2002 the 790 was a 30 HP engine and the new 790’s are 30HP. Maybe someone can give some insight on what is correct. This tractor also has a John FEL. The question is are FEL’s easy to detach are reattach on the John Deere 790’s?

Stoner,

In the 2004 model year, JD lowered the engine horsepower on the 790, with no real explanation. Prior to the 2004 model year it was 30, after 2004 it became 27. The loader is as easy as any as far as removing. The biggest problem is always the hydraulic quick disconnects.

Now this helps solve a mystery. I have a 790 and a dealer told me recently that it was only 27hp. When I bought it the dealer told me it was 30hp. I went home, got out the manual and it said 30hp. I now have "some" restored confidence in the dealer who I disagreed with except he should have probably known of the hp change.

They went to a different engine in 2003 or 2004...PTO HP dropped by 1
The original engine was 91 cid, the newest one is 81 cid
