John Deere rep going to take tractor

/ John Deere rep going to take tractor #41
The Dealer rep was unquestionably out of line in how he handled the situation. His first question should have been "do you still want this tractor?"

The conflict:

The purchase contract wasn't read until after business hours. The next day, the signee is busy with other things as well as shopping at another dealership after agreeing to purchase from the original dealer. With a purchase contract waiting to be signed.

The original dealer spent time generating the purchase contract and possibly prepping the tractor for the buyer. The original dealer gets a call from the sister dealer which somehow knows there is already a contract for purchase from the same person. Original dealer is ticked off and cancels sale. Which, he has a right to do so.

Just looking at this from another angle.

Sounds like there was no formal agreement to purchase and the dealer had another sale lined up.

Price quote doesn't mean they have to hold something for you for an indeterminate amount of time while details are sorted out. You are free to shop around, just as they are to sell to the first.

I got a price quote on a tractor, didn't pull the trigger, called a few days later ready to buy and it had sold.

From what I gather from how the whole thing went, they might have just saved you a big headache if they are acting the way you say and they haven't even got a cent of your money, think how'd they act after being paid.

Actually, the OP got a quote, agreed to it and a purchase contract e-sent for his signature. This is where things go south.

Your all missing the part about the price increase that he mentioned!

That changes everything and they should have expected him to look at it from any and every angle including visiting an other shop be it a sister store or not.

A bit of restraint on thier part, and a closer look and they may have been able to keep a customer. In this case they showed thier true colors and if he is smart he is no longer shopping for a JD and awaiting delivery of a much better Kubota, Kioti, LS or Massey and be treated with respect!

Car dealer shenanigans . . .

Before you visit the stealership, look at the old Kurt Russel movie "Used Cars".

Friend of mine wanted a compact something for his wife, the dealer wanted to sell him a huge, full-sized car because the dealer would make more money on it.

Gambit one - "If you buy this car, instead of owing two thousand dollars, you'll only owe thirty-two hundred."

Must be the new math, unfortunately for the dealer, I didn't sleep through math class.

Gambit two - "Do you think you are man enough to handle a full sized car?"

Friend went ballistic . . . and loud . . . "Look you miserable (many expletives deleted), I flew B-52s in Vietnam and they're (bleep bleep bleep) bigger than ANYTHING you've got on this (deleted deleted deleted) car lot!!!"

I got him calmed down enough to get him into the car and out of there before the police arrived, but it was 36th street in Miami, and they're used to that.

Best Regards,

Mike in Florida (but FAR from Miami for half a century so far)

when I bought my x300 at the Deere dealer, I dealt with the sales manager, it seems lawn mower was beneath him or something...no real interest in selling it to me. They didn't have one on their lot but had a few at one of their other locations about 50 miles away. Took them a few weeks to transfer it. Took them a couple months to bill me (which I'm not going to complain about).

One of our friends boyfriend was out (long distance relationship). Her tractor needed some work, so her boyfriend went to the same Deere dealer to order the parts, he was just going to wait for them to come on their next shipment, but the dealer wanted to charge him shipping.....boyfriend works for a Deere dealer back east and told them that's not how it works. Seems they got all flustered that they couldn't pull a fast one on him with the shipping.

I went to the Kubota dealer looking for a cultipacker. They didn't have any in stock, but they called one of their suppliers and found some that were on clearance. The sales guy said he ordered the last two they had and if I wanted one of them I could pay for it now or come by when they came in to check them out. Otherwise he'd just put both of them into inventory. No hurry, no pressure. I put some money down and one and picked it up when it came in.

A complete difference in attitude between the two places.

Now when I need something tractor related I go to the Kubota dealer, even though they're farther away....just better service.

Im not here to defend Deere, however I spent 5 years selling equipment for Deere with two different large conglomerations and I can tell you that when you price something, and get a quote, that quote is stored internally to where when you type up someone name into the quoting system which is also where you push that quote into a purchase order, it will show the name and the quote and by who. This happened all the time and can be a disaster, think about it, one person can go to 5 stores in network and tie up 5 different people's time and try to negotiate the deal with each one to see who has the best price, and you would be surprised, not every salesman will quote the same price usually, I know I would change the margin depending on several factors. It sounds to me like there was a misunderstanding about you and your situation, you had questions that weren't answered yet and the dealer treated you like you were tying to price the tractor over again at a different store within the same network, thats unfortunate. Like it or not, the DOT "dealer of tomorrow " in greenland is a mutli multi store conglomeration, makes it hard to get a price other than from your local store because of market share, which is a metric used to determine what the dealership gets paid at the end of the year based on volume in each segment of the market compared to other brands in that segment in that market. They have whats called AORs or areas of responsibility and selling new units outside of the aor actually goes against market share, and in the land of Deere, everything revolves around marketshare. Im sorry you had the experience, someone should have told you about the cash discount in lieu of financing if they weren't going to eat the finance charge up front to sell for cash price plus financing. The regional person was probably a sales director who assumed you were pricing the same company and that doesn't go over very well. Anyways, just my unsolicited opinion

I agree. I think there's a lot more to this story than has been disclosed at this point.

What this calls for is a high level of maturity. Talking about it on social media excluded. :)

Lots of folks are saying leave green alone period.
However, while I understand the frustration! It appears there is no actual info from the original dealership or salesman.
beyond comments being judgmental to the first location, why lump the dealership at a distance with the ‘rep’?
Now I would not be in favor of using a dealership a couple hours away, even if I turned my own wrenches, parts supply issues would make that rough unless it was in a location where I was at frequently. My rational for this that the salesperson is not who you will be working with after purchase! Then the parts and service/shop department are your contacts. Unless there is a reason to do green, I would certainly look into other colors, but again focus on the parts and service departments after deciding on a model by that brand that meet my needs!
