I have two JD F1145 mowers one starts right away and the other acts like it is going to start right away but then have to crank it about another 5 to 10 seconds before it starts and then it emits black smoke when it first starts ( I always wait for the intake heater to cycle ) but it runs good the whole time it is running and I changed the fuel filter and air filters but still the same . After it starts it runs fine it almost seems it loses prime any one had this problem ?

Black smoke CAN be a sign of inadequate air flow. Be sure nothing is blocking the passage. It can also indicate the mixture is too rich, as in it's getting too much fuel.

have you checked to see if heater is really working, not just the indicator?

May need to check compression.
Found this inexpensive kit at HF that might work. At least one review said they used it on a Yanmar engine in a JD garden tractor.

My old gasser F725 has gotten hard to start. Having to use starter fluid to get it going and wait for the smoke to clear. I have a spare engine that had good compression last tested so may be a winter project.

TractorGuy thanks for the HF link , since it has a intake heater I'll have to pull the injectors to do a compression test , also heard from thepumpguysc there are some problems with the supply pump on the injector pump , it will be a little while before I get around to doing it since it is running and I'll update this thread when I get it figured out .
