Could any John Deere dealers on here tell me if John Deere has a buy back policy? I purchased a 997 zero Turn mower 2 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems. First time I mowed with it after I got it back on the trailer I noticed one of the wheel studs was missing. Checked the other 3 studs on that wheel and all were loose. Tightened them up and dealer gave me one the next morning to replace the lost one with. No harm no foul. With 9 hours on the mower the hydraulic pump was leaking. Took back to the dealer , they said the pump was not serviceable and a whole new pump had to be put on which was over $2000.00 bucks. Dealer replaced with new unit ,changed the filter and fluid. Also the front wheel bearings were popping, right side bad, dealer said he would replace both sides. had to order the parts not in at this time. Was mowing today and the engine would shut completly off and die or the blades would shut off and the engine would run or blades would quit and then engine would die. MY dealer has been nothing but helpful to me and I would recommend them to anyone but I have had it with this mower. I must have been built on a monday morning or friday afternoon. Dose Deere have a buy back policy ? I just want them to give me another 997 or give me my money back. I asked my salesman if Deere had a buy back policy and he said he had never heard of one but I wondered If some of the dealers on here would know. If they do they will be buying this one back and hopefully giving me another 997. Thanks in advance for any information!

Man, that sucks.

Maybe term it a swap out, not a buy back? Might get more traction.

I am not a dealer but the very first green piece of equipment I ever bought was a stx38 16 or so years ago. It was problematic to say the least and after the third trip my dealer made to pick mine up he brought a brand new one to replace it.

I agree with ddivinia, talk to your dealer and tell them they should swap it out for you.

Goodluck,
Max

From the John Deere Website - I think it only applies to "residential" riding mowers - but if they'll do this for an x728 that has no problems they should do it your mower that is obviously defective.

"A John Deere Promise

Buy any John Deere riding mower. If you are not happy, bring it back within 30 days of purchase and we'll give you a full refund or exchange."

The earlier you do it, the better chance you have I think. That is one high dollar mower - I bet John Deere does it no questions asked. The dealer needs to get John Deere involved.

I'm pretty sure that they will swap it, it's been so problematic they should be able to call it a lemon...as long as the dealer can put the problem on JD and not eat it themselves it should be a no brainer.

Talk with your dealer and have him put pressure on Deere...I don't think asking for a replacement 997 is unreasonable.

That being said...there is no JD Promise on the commercial Z-Traks. Deere does have a "lemon" policy but the same component must fail 3 times before they offer a new machine and even then it is up to their review...

Sounds like your dealer is willing to help, use him as your leverage. Good luck!

Ditto with Gamble. JD promise only applys to residential machines. Your dealer sounds like he is doing the right thing. I'm curious if you know where the leak was on the pump? Just curious.

Took my mower into the dealer this morning and dropped it off. This was at 6:30 in the morning so I went back at lunch to pick up a 997 loaner they were lending me. They told me that what they had found so far was the safety switch in the seat was bad and was not servicable and they had to order me a whole brand new seat. I asked if the bearings had come in for my front wheels and he told me no not yet but they had to order me new wheels instead of bearings because they could not get bearings to fit my mower. I told the mechanic I was going to try and have them give me another new 997 to replace this one and he told me if I pushed hard enough they should do it, so when they call me to tell me its ready , the salesman and the owner and I will be having a talk. My mower only has 15 hours on it and has been to the shop 3 times. I still have a 757 which I have used for 6 years and it has never been back to the shop for one thing. I hope my dealer or deere steps up to the bat for me on this one. Shot_gun the leak on my pump he told me was a gasket leak but these units were not servicable so they had to replace the whole pump.

It sounds like your dealer is on the right page. Tell them you want a new mower. This one is a lemon and you have enough lemonade around your place.

What little I know about Deere all you will have to do to get a brand new machine is have your family lawyer write a letter to Corporate and mention the Magnuson Moss Act and they will be calling your dealer to go pick it up. They don't want the bad press and if you really knew what it cost them to manufacture the Z-trak its pennies on the dollar to what you paid or agreed to pay for on a loan. ( Particulalry a Deere backed loan ) You'll get what you deserve. Or come on over to the Orange side anyway you are welcome!

The service manager called me and told me my mower was ready to pick up so I took back the loaner and picked up my mower. My salesman was not there so I could not talk to him but I called back about an hour later and he was there. I told him I would like Deere to take back this mower and give me another 997. He told me that he had never had any luck with Deere taking anything back but if I wanted he would make some calls and let me know what he could find out. Did not sound very promising. A few hours later he called me back and said he had 2 of the area reps agree to give me another mower but they have to go through one more person and I should know something by monday. So I will keep my fingers crossed !!

OB1kubota, look at my signature and you will see I already own one peice of orange. IT has been a great tractor. I just like the 7 iron deck and have owned several John Deere mowers and never had a problem with any of them until this one. Hopefully Deere will step up to the plate for me or about the time my warranty runs out my next one will be orange.

That is encouraging. Also, it is early in the season - they can use the other one as a demo, etc.

BCNU .... did mean to upset you just didn't see an orange Zero steer in your fold. I have both a ZD21 & a ZD326P. The older ZD still on stage one pumps and despite all the bad press no shavings in the return filter yet. The 326P is an outright monster that will cut anything in its path. Its got a Tank deck on it less the adjustment skirt found on the Cub Cadet. Go look at Art White's site and you will see what I'm talking about...

You didn't upset me all, just pointing out That I already had some orange equipment. I looked at the ZD331 before i bought my 997 but have had such good luck with the deere mowers before I stuck with them. The 997 is a mowing machine, I just got a bad one. I may never have another problem with it but if they will give me another new one Im sure going to take it.

Neil,

You know better than that. JD has not achieved its reputation in this way, and I doubt that mower will end up with someone else. If a dealer with JD does that I suspect that dealer will be in trouble with corporate. Four of my dealer friends, who between them have had two or three take backs said that the JD rep wanted the machines back so that they could be gone over. To all: bear in mind JD, as of 2006, could operate the entire company on their parts division for replacement parts and upgrades for existing machines. It would and should be of no trouble to them to take back a problematic machine to keep a happy customer.

Neil likes to make drive-thru comments like that in the JD forum because he'd secretly like to get a JD dealership...
