John Deere 870 Seal Replacement Question

We have a JD 870 that needs a seal to be replaced in the rear. Here are some photos:

What is the procedure to remove the axle to get access to the seal? Everything is unbolted like I normally would in a Yanmar, Kubota, etc, but the axle won't slide out.

Here is description of procedure from the tech manual. Implies one needs to drive the axle out using a lead hammer once the housing is off (as I read it). Hope this helps but holler back if need more.
