I was looking around on Tractor house.com and noticed there was some John Deere 856's listed. Best I could tell the only difference in it and a 855 was the number. Does anyone know anything about them. Are they identical to the 855 or are they different.

I think the 856 was a golf and turf model , came with wider tires , and scv was an option. Somthing like that . I worked on one once and it was idenical to an 855.

If you search for it on JD Parts, it comes up along with the 855's so I guess it pretty much the same...I have never heard of before though...

An 856 was a 855 that had the three point hitch removed. Then a sub-frame was mounted under the machine and out the back. Reel mower heads were mounted to to the frame and driven hydraulically from a pump set mounted on the pto. Not a bad mower in it's time, but most have been stripped down and converted back to regular CUT's. You still see the 856 decals one one now and then.
