john deere 855
I bought a John Deere 855 with a backhoe on it, but no 3 pt hitch. John Deere asked $1500 for the hitch kit, but I found one through a Yan Mar dealer in Texas for much, much less. My problem is that I can't stop the sway when I am using the blade for snow or the finish mower. The sway chains don't seem to dampen the sway.

Anyone else have this problem?

Welcome to TBN:D

If you can post some pictures of your setup, I am sure we can help you solve this problem quickly.

It looks like your sway chains may be too long for your tractor. Might work for the Yanmar tractor they were built for, but maybe not the 855.
If, in the pictures, they're adjusted as short as possible...well, they aren't going to work as they are. You could try removing a link from each.
Once properly set up, you shouldn't have more then a few inches lateral travel when the implement is raised.

BTW, Bob, you might want to reverse your rear tires. That might give more clearance.

Just as a reference, this is from JD parts:

Thanks. I am beginning to think that the lift arms that I bought from a Yan Mar dealer are too straight and that maybe I need a pair that bend outward after they get past the back of the tire. Maybe that's what the ones from John Deere do, but I can't tell from the drawing.

Your 3PH arms look just like the ones on my 955. Look at your anti-sway chains.... they're drooping almost to the ground. How would you expect that to keep an implement from swaying? Center the implement behind the tractor and tighten up the chains until they are TIGHT... just becareful to tighten them equally to keep the implement centered.

I think I need new chains. These are the ones that came with the Yan Mar hitch but they can't be shortened any further. I probably need to order some from John Deere.

I just ordered some the other day to replace the ones I have on my 955 now which are not correct. $80 per side. Seems kind of steep to me for a couple of chain links and a turnbuckle. Maybe they're made of super-strong unobtainium.

The entire 3 pt hitch kit is $1,500 from JD. Yan Mar only wanted $275.

Kind of sad that you'll have half the price of the entire hitch kit wrapped up in a set of sway chains.

I understand that green paint is very expensive.

I would think that adjusting the chains would be a piece of cake, even if you had to visit a hardware store for some type of additional pieces. You don't have to call a "chain specialist" for this job. :D

Would be, if adjustment was the only concern. It appears the chains are too long for this application.
Cutting a link out might work.

The ones on my Yanmar 226 (JD750) do not have any chain links at all.

They have a U shaped rod that is welded directly onto the turnbuckle bolts that are connected to the bolt that goes through the lift arm on one end, and holds the shackle (is that what you call it?) that attaches to the axle mount on the other end. The turnbuckle body is 4 1/2" long.

If I couldn't get rid of the chain, I'd find a shorter turnbuckle body to put on there and cut the bolts to fit.

Added some pictures so you can see how much bend is in the lift arms also.

I think, when the weather is warmer, I'm going to make my own sway chains. I can't see paying JD $160 for a pair of short chains. They don't even have any of that expensive green paint on them.

From these pics, I see two extra links that can be removed or bypassed to shorten the chains. Also, I see a connection problem that may break the cast shackle on the axle. Put a bolt through both sides, and not just use one side to connect. Using one side will cause the chain to be too tight at the top of the 3 ph lift, I think. You don't want the expense of dealing with a broken cast part. Hope this helps.

Thanks. You're right. I'll fix that.

My 855 has the JD style turnbuckles.
Had to choke them up to minimum length to take the sway out of Cat 1
(26" wide) attachments and draw bar.

You won't get all the sway out. You have to have enough play to be able to hook up and unhook implements.

The attaching points on the Yanmar arms may not be at the same point on the arms made for JD. You may need custom restraints. (chains)
Center the attachment behind the tractor. Measure distance center to center of attaching bolts. Make it even on both sides. Cut chain length and attaching hardware as close to this length as you can.

Good luck
Wyo

This is what the JD sway chains look like for the 855/955.
