Thanks to everyone for your help. I want to make sure I am doing the pto correctly. The pto handle is on the left side underneath the seat clutch fully engaged lever should move forward and stay. Release clutch and pto should be moving. Is this correct?

Correct. With the engine stopped see if the lever will move to engage, if it does with the engine off but not with it running the likely culprit is the clutch adjustment or it is worn out. This assumes the rod itself is not stuck, are you getting any movement at all? It may free up on it's own if you are lucky after some use and driving, that should help circulate the oil over everything in the case.

The pto handle will not move forward. It will move toward the left wheel. I tried it both ways engine running and off. I will drive it around for a couple of days and see what happens.

Something else you can try with engine off and in 8th gear would be to have someone rock the tractor slowly using the rear tires while you try to move the lever.

The lever should not be moving outwards in the direction of the wheel at all. If it does it will possibly bend and break off. I would try to spray some Liquid Wrench or PB blaster on the shaft the lever is attached to that enters the housing. This may have rusted or siezed on you. After spraying this tap it very lightly with a hammer to help free it up. The idea is to vibrate the shaft a little not beat on it.

Is your grandfather or whoever gave it to you able to provide any information on the pto problem?

I will give that a try tomorrow. My uncle (which is 99 years old) said the last time he used it was with a bushhog. It said he had finished with one field and went over to the next field to continue. At this time we went to engage the pto and it would not engage. Everything else it working fine on the tractor I drove it around for about and hour today with no problems.

I guess the next step if this doesn't work tomorrow is to break the tractor apart and see what it looks like on the inside. Has anyone done this before?

I bought mine in 1997 with a bad clutch in weathered condition, first thing I did was put in a new clutch and water pump. Only thing wrong with the clutch was the inside spline in the center was stripped. Probable cause was someone trying to pull it to start and popped the clutch. The linings were like new.

You can split this tractor if you have some decent jacks and a way to roll the separate sections apart. I found it easier to block the front section in place and move the rear section away. I would get the service manual and look through it first.

Does the rear shaft turn free or is it stuck?

I will check the rear shaft today and see if it will turn. The manual has been shipped so I should have it in a couple of days.

Thanks and have a great day.

The shaft turns freely. Putting the tractor in 8th gear and rocking the it back and forth did not work. The handle just will not move.

Here is a drawing showing the linkage from JD parts.

From what I can see from the drawing I am trying to move the wrong level. There is a handle underneath the seat that will move toward the wheel and then there is a littlie handle ahead of it and from the drawing that is what I should be moving. If that is the case that handle will move.

Notice the two levers along the side of the housing the one up close to the clutch pedal if present is the mid pto lever, the one that is towards the rear is the rear pto lever.
