John Deere 709

I am looking at purchasing an early 2000/late 90's JD 709 rotary cutter. I know that JD had some issues with their gear boxes (on the MX series I think?) and I wanted to make sure that this wasn't one of them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wish that I had bought the heavier 709 instead of the MX7.Even though the MX7 has had no problems to date.
