John Deere 56 rider

Anybody have any info on this rear engine unit? My neighbor has one for $150. It's not seized, but I have not fueled it up to get it started. It was running fine 6 months ago. Looks rough but would be good size for my father-in-law to cut around the house and drainfield. Any known defects or expensive routine replacements?

If I can get it going for around $250, it would be worth it.

According to Weekendfreedommachines.org, the Deere model 56 was built from 1970 to 1974, so the one you are looking at is at LEAST 31 years old. At this point it's value is almost totally based on what condition it is in. Since I can't see it, I won't even offer a guess. What I will say is that these were solid little mowers in their time, but the Tecumseh 6 HP V60 motor is getting hard to get parts for.

So says the local repair guy. I think I'll pass. Thanks for the info. I didn't realize it was that old.
