As I was cutting today I had my RPM's at 2200. Every now and then the engine would rise up to 2300-2400 rpms and stay there for about a minute and then slowly go back down. This happened about five times in an hour of cutting. Then after cutting I lowered the rpms all the down and it seemed as if it took a little bit longer to reach idle speed. Does anyone know what this could be? I just had the tractor serviced at a John Deere store.

PS The engine never overheated or sputtered.

I wonder if there's any air in fuel system or if cold start advance is malfunctioning? You might try disconnecting cold start sensor for a trial. Governor is in the inj pump.

It seems like it would be more of air-like symptoms in the fuel line. Is the best way to eliiminate this problem to just drain fuel line at the fuel filter?

Actually it's best to bleed all the way to the inj pump galley.

Will the air eventually bleed out on it own?

Too a certain extent but air compresses in injectors easier unlike diesel fuel.
