John Deere 318 Not Charging!

   / John Deere 318 Not Charging! #11
Just thought I'd give an update, and thanks for your input! I replaced the switch. I looked up the part numbers on JD, then Google for 'crosses'! (Yeah, I'm 'thrifty') Switch from JD- $19-, switch from local small engine guy- $12.99. That solved the 'wiggle-thing'! Pulled the two outside regulator leads and have 32VAC at medium idle. They call for 26-52VAC at high idle, so I'm in the range! re-plugged them, and pulled the center lead on the Reg, and got no DC output! Looks like the regulator!! Called JD for Reg price, $81-!!! Checked Google for a 'cross' that led me to EBay. and ordered an exact replacement for $31-!! More to follow! Thanks Again! ~Scotty

Glad to be of help. Keep us posted and let us know if the regulator fixes the problem.

Scotty,
There is a difference between cheap and thrifty:
A thrifty person saves a dollar here or there, so he can spend it on something else, like beer
A cheap person saves all his money and drinks his friends beer :D

Final update: Replaced the Rectifier/Regulator. Plugged in the Stator wires, and again 30-40 VAC! With the center lead disconnected I read no DC volts when tested to ground! I had 12vdc from the lead that plugs on to that center terminal, but knew I was just reading battery voltage! Thought I had a bad part! Plugged it in anyway, and viola!! Battery light goes out, and I've got 14VAC from the (connected) center terminal to ground!!! Guess I had to have a 'draw' on it, before it 'kicked in'!! Some things electrical, I just figure, "It's Magic" and move on! Looks like I'm good to go!!! Thanks again!! ~Scotty
