John Deere 317
Hello I am New here but I am not new to tractors. I just bought a 1983 John Deere 317 with the series 2 Kohler twin cylinder engine and I am wondering what oil I should use. I'm gonna be working up a big garden for my wife and want to do some maintenance before I begin. Any help would be appreciated. thanks -Kodi.

Congrats on the purchase. I use 0W-30 mobil 1 in my 1983 JD318. Do you have any attachments for it?

Thanks for the reply, I take it synthetic is okay than since you are using Mobil? I have no attachments for it but I have a couple small 2 bottom plows that I'm going to make work with it as well as a small disc and harrow.

Any 0W-30 synthetic will be fine. If you will be using the machine in the winter, I would recommend spending the money and use synthetic fluid for the HST and hydraulics.

I used regular UTF and in the extreme cold the fluid takes a long time to warm to the point where there in no drag on the engine and hydraulics while plowing.
Right now I point the tractor towards the woods while still in the garage, put the rear on jack stands and let it drive on the stands warming the fluid while I do all the perimeter shoveling. End of next summer its getting synthetic UTF.

Don't know how 2 bottom plow will work, but here is a video of a single bottom on a 317.. a bit wet for good plowing but he is moving right along.

Thanks for the reply. We used to have a JD318 and my dad used the two bottom virtually problem free, I realize the difference between the 317 and 318 and in my opinion I doubt the 1hp difference is gonna make much difference in pulling the plow. If it won't work ill figure out a way. I grew up on a farm and fabrication came with the territory.

I hope we get a chance to see it pulling two bottoms. What size bottoms?

Any pics of the two bottom used on the 318?

Did find this video of a 2 bottom behind a 318. Maybe your dad?
