The 317 doesn't seem to have any replaceable bearings or bushings in the front axle for the steering spindles. When there is play, how can you tell whether its the spindles or the axle that needs replacing?

I guess you would need the technical manual to be able to measure appropriate tolerances...

I have the same problem I will be looking for a replacement axle. I think it will be too cost prohibitive to have the axle machined out to accept a bushing. Steve

I'm waiting on a tech manual now. Will a 318 front axle work on a 317? I know it has bushings at least.

No idea...But you can register at www.jdparts.com for free and get the info just like I posted above, complete with part numbers. There is a quick tutorial linked in my signature.

I would do it for you but you know the saying: Teach a man to fish...plus you will find MANY uses for it;)

I don't think so.
The 316 and the 318 are the same. The 317 is built different.
The axles are the same on all three, but the steering linkage is where the difference lies.
As kennyd mentioned,go to the JD parts website and look there.

According to the parts listing the 317 and 318 axles are different. They even look different in the diagrams.

Cub5k,you are right, they aren't quite the same. The 316 and the 318 shared the same frame, the 317 was the different one.:)
