John Deere 2013-2015, 5E series brake problem?

This is a subject we've been discussing in rustyshackleford's thread about the problems he's had with his new 5E series tractors. I have had a similar problem with my new tractor.

Simply stated, when I push the brake pedals on my 2014 5075E tractor, they go straight to the floor and do not provide enough braking to stop the tractor. With the second and subsequent pushes, the brakes work nicely. If I don't use the brakes again within a few seconds, the pedals go to the floor again. My dealer and apparently John Deere also, say this is normal and within specs for my tractor.

I'd like to get an idea how many other owners of the 5055E, 5065E and 5075E tractors of model years 2013-2015 are experiencing this problem. This forum is just a start, as most owners do not participate here, but it should be a good place to begin. I don't know if this problem is specific to the cab models and will be interested to learn more from your responses.

I intend to address this problem directly with John Deere, as they have apparently limited the amount of support they are willing to authorize my dealer to provide; it took several weeks for my dealer to get authorization from JD to come out and test the brake system pressure, and that's apparently all they gave him the ok to do. My dealer has been very responsive to my needs , but without any instructions or reimbursement from JD, I understand why he cannot provide any further help with this problem.

The legal advice I got is to gather as many other owners as possible to join in my claim. I am also going to contact OSHA for help and if necessary, the state's attorney general's office. My tractor is not safe to operate. My insurance carrier has assured me I would be covered in the event of an accident but that with the information I've provided so far, they would subrogate any claim against John Deere. I have the impression JD is ok with that and can only guess it's because finding and implementing a solution to the problem would cost them more.

Yes! You make a very good point. One would think brakes should have been perfected many years ago, so that every new tractor would come with good brakes today.

The brakes will not "bottom out" but will travel at least 3/4 of the way down before any noticable slowing/stopping happens. Pumping the pedal does provide effective stopping. The service manager at the dealership where I bought the machine told me this was "normal" and could not be fixed or adjusted out with "bleeding" the system. How much travel will the pedal have after a few hundred or thousand hours. I may follow through and get some documentation and this for my own safety.

I purchased a 2014 5055E cab unit 3 weeks ago. Researching which model to buy I spent quite a few hours on Green tractor talk and this forum and due to comments regarding issues with brakes and melting fuel tanks on the 5E series test drove several and spoke with numerous dealers on these issues. Every 5055 I drove had what I would call "soft brakes", far less responsive than on my Kubota. The selling dealer assured me 'my' brakes had been serviced and worked fine before the tractor was delivered to my son's home, and I've only driven it around his lot since purchase. The brakes go down 3-4 inches before slowing occurs on the first pump; the second pump is quite firm and hardly depresses at all but solidly engages and stops the tractor. I will take it it camp this weekend and work it a few days and will certainly pay attention to how they work. I warned the dealer beforehand I would return the tractor if I had problems with the brakes. If they don't function adequately to operate safely in steep or timbered terrain I will certainly let you know. While they may safely function according to Deere standards they are not comparable to the Kubota.

My 2014 5075 cab has the same problem. The dealer has looked at it twice and bled the brakes both times to no avail. They stated the brakes are working normally. They further advised me this is their answer to the sticking brakes problem with the older models. No, I don't like the way they work. It seems like an accident waiting to happen.

This is very good. I didn't expect so many responses in just the first few hours of this thread!
Beanbag, I will look at the Green Tractor Talk Forum to see what I can learn there. Maybe we can find more owners with similar problems on that forum.
I hope any 5E series owners that have had accidents or mishaps because of inadequate brakes will join us as well.

Trook, I have heard that as well, that the first tractors in this series had issues with the brakes locking-up. I was told Deere's solution was to make the brakes work the way they do now; very inadequate and unsafe in my opinion.

Let's hope Deere will be willing to correct this problem, after enough of us have shared our experiences with the questionable brakes on these tractors.

I have a 2014 5065e, the brakes do travel down farther on the first push than on subsequent pushes, but even the first push stops the tractor well.... So far at least.

Here is the list of all the tractors that I posted on the other thread that utilize the same brake valve. JD has not changed the brake valve much since the introduction of the 1020/2020 tractors. This valve is a manual brake valve supplied with oil from the hyd system.

I have a 2014 5065E 4x4 with cab that has the same issue as everyone else. Talked to the dealer about it and they said they haven't heard of anything about the brake issue. Should have went with a CASE. My Grandpaw always told me t o never buy green. He's probably turning over in his grave.
