John Deere 2010 Bad??

/ John Deere 2010 Bad?? #21
I have a 1961 gasoline engine 2010. It starts very easily and everything works well on it. Shifts easily power steering works well. PTO does not do any thing but spin when engaged. Yesterday I graded some of my property with a 7ft grader box then used the loader to pull out unwanted fence posts. I looked the tractor over engaged the PTO shifted trough the gears raised and lowered the rockers with the grader on. everything worked as it should with no strange noises. I really like my tractor. I have read many reviews on the 2010 and apparently it is not the best John Deere ever came up with but, it seems that there are more people out there who like them than don't. The best thing I like about my tractor is the fact that I have a bush hog , a front end loader, a 7ft grader box, a new seat, fresh paint job , 90% firestone tires , and it came at a fraction of the cost of other tractors and has already paid for its self in work done.

Ask and yea shall receive:
2010 brakes weren't very good when they rolled NEW off the assembly line and age didn't help them. Hyd filter can be difficult to clean & expensive to replace(AT21513 Filter Element ELEMENT ,OIL FILTER ADD 163.31 USD) .PTO engagement is unique and normally noisy as it engages a mechanism know for wearing out & a clutch plate simultaneously, hyd rockshafts have a long history of leakage and the control linkage on the inside resembles an "erector set". Hyp pump is located in the bottom of the clutch housing and is very difficult to R&R. Engine have an expensive deck plate with cylinder liners attached and lastly 1010/2010 diesel engines were known for hard starting, excessive smoking and prone for cyl head cracking and pre-combustion chambers getting loose. Because of limited yrs of production new & used parts are scarce for them.

I hope your 2010 is one of the better ones,Jim
Jim,

Seriously, I'm consulting with you before I buy another tractor. Seems you have almost infinite knowledge (at least some models).

Thanks for the compliment and you can consult me any time you feel the need. One can't grow up on a farm operating tractors,be employed for a JD dealer for over 21 yrs then custom farm/bale hay for 28 more yrs and not have some tractor knowledge. My knowledge of newer tractors built after mid-90's is limited but I'm fairly knowledgeable on most brands before that time. I own green, blue & orange tractors so I'm diversified.

I'll 2nd for you to enjoy your 2010 as I've previously stated an old saying:

One can't tear up a good 2010 nor can they repair a bad 2010.

I hope you never experience problems with the pto shift collar(parts key 22) or gear(parts key 5) as those parts are NLA

I want to thank you all for your comments advice and information. I realize that there are folks on here than know a lot more than I do about this subject and I value the input even if its not easy to hear . The fact remains that I could not touch a better tractor that will do what this one will do for the price I paid. I am sure for the amount of use it will get over the years on 5 acres after some grading and a few bush hoggings that it will last me.

Thanks Jim I respect your knowledge. I also respect the knowledge of my highly skilled machinist friend who seems to be able to make anything.

When operating farm machinery it's very nice to have a good machinist as a close friend!!!!!!!!!!

You said gas not diesel. There lies 90% of the troubles.

 ...You cant work the gas engine as hard, but most on here dont work their tractors hard anyway. AllenSper should have no trouble. Iv found the gasoline engine quite reliable if used at 80% or less of its rating. Long periods of 100% are reason for concern.

I have an old model 35 series 1 front end loader . I am guessing 1961 because of the year of the tractor . What buckets will fit on this ? It has a manure bucket on it I am thinking a regular bucket would be nice to have.

It wouldn't surprise me if a materials bucket that will fit your model 35 FEL is very easy to locate.

Still loving my 2010 however I have noticed the hydraulics have slowed a bit when cold in the am. I am wondering what I should be looking for when it might be time to change hydraulic filter ? where can get one ? where is it located in the tractor ? how do I change it. I want to repack the bucket cylinders over the winter and change this filter also.

Actually the 2010 doesn't have a filter but a screen. One can access the screen from the RH side below the footrest by removing the cap held in place by 3 bolts. Clean the screen with solvents & compressed air. Stand screen up with open end up in a clean bucket then pour hyd oil inside of screen & if oil readily penetrates screen it should be clean.

I would not be worried about the hydraulics being slow when cold. That is normal as the fluid itself is thicker when cold and does not pump as well. With your size property, the JD will probably outlive you. Don't look back and enjoy your machine. That vintage of Deere has the classic look. I have always thought they were some of the best looking tractors ever made. These days you have to tell the tractors apart by the color.
