2004 John Deere 110 TLB
Hello, I have a 2004 John Deere 110 backhoe that suddenly will not crank or start. I started it just fine early this morning as always (it's typically an amazingly easy machine to start). This afternoon when I got home and tried to start it, I pressed the key in to light up the glow plugs as I usually do, the instrument cluster flashed and then went totally dead. Now when I turn the key, press the key, whatever, it does absolutely nothing. No clicking sound, nothing at all. I opened up the plastic cover to expose all of the plugs and took out the key switch. I checked for continuity on all of the terminals according to the factory service manual (bought it at the dealer when I bought the machine used), and everything on the key switch checks out just fine in every position. I checked battery voltage, 12.48 volts. Checked voltage on the wiring harness going to the key switch and it has around the same 12.48 volts. Made sure my pto switch wasn't engaged. Checked voltage going to the starter, same voltage. That reaches the limit of my pay grade. Not sure where else to turn from here. Should I check a solenoid somewhere? Or fuses or relays? Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thank you.

If you haven't checked the fuses/relays I would. But really I'd start by inspecting/cleaning/tightening the ground at the battery and at the frame, sounds like your culprit to me, enough connection to read voltage on a meter but not enough to do anything else.

Have you tried to jumper the starter?
Have you checked all the fuses?
Have you cleaned all cable connections?
Cables can be corroded inside and not visible from outside

Hey I did all that still nothing, no crank. There is power the lights work. Is there safety stuff like seats or something with the backhoe. So what happen with mine was I went in reverse then forward pretty quick and it just shut down. Now it won’t crank at all. Not sure what to do.

I had a JD110 TLB for maybe close to 20 years, and had this issue more than once.

The starting circuit consists of multiple relays, ignition switch, seat switch, fuse(s)... I used a test light and traced the circuit until a bad node was found. More than once, it was a bad connection feeding that node. Once a defective relay. Once, even a bad ground to the engine block that visually looked fine.

Tracing the circuit is really THE way to find the fault. If you want to try the shot-gun method, remove each fuse/relay, spray with contact cleaner, and re-install...one at a time! :)

If you haven't already, I recommend checking the fuses and relays first. However, my suggestion would be to begin by examining, cleaning, and tightening the ground connections at both the battery and the frame. It seems like this could be the issue - there might be enough connection to register voltage on a meter, but not sufficient for other functionalities.

!
Good suggestion...I had the same problem with my JD110...more than once. One time it was the ground attached to the right side of the engine block. The connection visually looked fine...but electrically it was not. The paint on the block insulated the block-lug connection. As the tractor aged, the lug-bolt head-lug bolt tread-block connection became faulty.

Where is the W4 ground located?
