Jinma 284
Is it just my bad luck or are all Jinma starters a problem. I have had to replace/rebuild the starter twice on my Jinma 284. Both times it was due to water leakage (ie rain) inside the case causing rust, corrosion and total failure of the starter. Does anyone know of a replacement starter that will fit on the 284 that might not have as bad a problem with water leakage?

PS I have had to replace the starters after only 18 months!

Neither? I don't recall too many waterproof starters... I have had no issues with my starter in seven years of rainy northwest use, but it does live under an awning that extends off the side of my garage...

After the first go 'round, and then knowing what caused the issue in the first place, I would have reassembled the starter and solenoid with RTV at all the assembly points (or packed monkey "poop" around the outside seams), of course being careful to NOT use grease or oil on the solenoid plunger - liquid or powdered graphite is indicated there.

I have the same starter Chris is using, this one is still in the box. It's the NippoDenso design, and is clearly better sealed than are the Chinese starters it's designed to replace. Check your Private Messages for details.

I replaced my starter on JIMNA 284 and it still just makes a noise could it be the plug in relay? Any suggestions.
Thanks

could be several things, the ground from the battery and to the engine is usual suspect, the other is the Key Switch is not carrying enough power to pull in the SOL that engages the starter. Often the best choice is to put an in-line relay so the key energizes the relay which then hits the SOL on the starter with high current.

Other things are bad battery voltage or a plate in the battery opens when cranking and it doe snot let current flow.
