Jimna 254 - fuel delivery problems

My tractor will run for 10 minutes just fine, then it sputters and dies. It bellows black smoke and won't start for about 10 more minutes. I suspect a fuel delivery problem but where do I start. I've changed the fuel filter and drain all the diesel fuel out of the tank. Please help...I need to be bushhogging.

Did you check inside the tank to see if something is blocking the fuel outlet? But, sounds to me more like a lack of combustion air. Is your air filter dirty/plugged?

Black smoke is usually an indication of too much fuel, check your return lines fittings etc for blocked or colapsed areas. Remove the return from the tank and make sure you have flow while the machines running.....Mike

After it sputters and dies, when you try to restart it, do you get any smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe? If you are getting white smoke, you are getting fuel, if not, then you may have an injector pump problem.

There could be "other problems" on your tractor, but, this is what I did on MY JM354. The original tank petcock and stainer bowl had very small orifices for fuel to travel through. I change my tank shut off to a standard 1/4" needle valve and Americanized a hose (used original hose and had one end changed to 1/4" NPT) to go directly to the spin on fuel filter. That was 8 yrs ago and have never had fuel issues since. As far as I was concerned the OEM strainer petcocks were a serious mistake from the factory. bjr
