Jerky hydraulics on JD 5310

started using john deere transmission filter,solved my problem.

UPDATE :: PROBLEM SOLVED!
-- Finally got back to the project. Drained the Transmission/Hyd fluid, pulled the filter screen to the right of the PTO. My filter was caked in junk. Cleaned it carefully with an old toothbrush and some diesel. Dried it with compressed air. Swapped the filter. Filled er back up with fluid. Good to go. I was told by a JD service tech to inspect the cavity where the screen is for iron shavings, etc. I used a magnetic extension wand, I did have a couple pieces in there - will keep an eye on that!

Had the same problem on a John Deere 5420. I recommend draining the fluid out of the back near the PTO, and not the drain plug. It really flushes out of the 2" filter hole compared to the 1/2" drain plug. In other words the filter hole will actually flush it, and the drain hole will drain the residual. Here it is with pictures.

Old post, but I'm starting to have the same problems. Will do this when I can get around to it. Your tractor was so clean. Did you drain all the fluid when you did this?

I'm pulling my hair out on this one.

The hydraulics on my John Deere 5310 have been acting up for a while. It was a slow and steady increase in problems. It started with the FEL being jerky while raising. Then the steering became jerky. It finally got to the point where all the hydraulics just quit altogether.

There was plenty of oil according to the dipstick. So I emptied out the oil, replaced the filter, removed the screen in the back and cleaned it out, and filled it with new oil. After doing that, everything worked great! I cut the hay in my meadow but after about 2 hours on the tractor the steering started to get jerky again.

Within a few minutes the hydraulics pretty much quit. The loader won't hardly go up anymore.

One thing I noticed that's strange, when operating the hydraulics, I noted a strange sound coming from underneath, that sounded like a "pffth pffth pffth". Almost like air escaping.

Can anyone point me toward my next step in troubleshooting this?

I am a little late here, but there is a mesh screen at the back by the pto shaft that is held in by 2 bolts, check that. What I did was park on a pond bank with the tractor facing downhill so that i dont have to drain the fluid, but otherwise you will need to drain the fluid. Its clogged up several times for me.

Or you can place a vacuum suction hose on the fill port to hold the tranny oil in while changing out that screen. Works great. (with the vacuum running of course ).
