JDx475 Overheating Problem

My JDX475 has been getting very warm and overheating, as well as running rough and "sucking for air." I have made sure my vents were clean as well as vaccumed out my airintake and radiator area and still having the same problems. My coolant is up to level. After throttling down and shutting down it usually backfires very loudly.

Is the temp gauge reading higher than usual? If so, the thermostat may have gone bad.
