What else can I check to increase the road speed of my GT245? The belts are good and not sliping, the forward pedal moves all the way to the stopper.
Can the trans oil be old?
Thanks Denni

Rated speed on that little feller is about 7 mph. Any "road" time should be on a trailer.

Thanks, I read that the speed is 7 mph. My problem is its only moving about 3 mph. Its taking me twice as long to mow the lawn as it did 2 years ago.

When was the last tranny oil/filter change?

What filter? The oil was soposed to be changed on my last dealer sevice. I know if it wasnt. I requested an ABC service and was very disapponted. This is why I'm here asking ?

What does the manual say about transmission oil and filter change? Parts shows a couple filters in the tranny, but don't see how easy they are to change out when changing oil.

Has it been slowing down steadily, or some abrupt slow-down?

Slowing down steadily over the past year or two.

How do I Identify the transaxle? Is there a serial number or make stamped somewhere?

Sometimes the throttle cable can slip or stretch or something and need to be adjusted.

GT245 only showed me one transaxle. The filter (item 18) is an M808763 retailing for $51.00. It is located in the center section of the transaxle. I would recommend having this done by some one familiar with hydrostatics. Those tiny hydro units are VERY particular. The smallest scratch on the surfaces of your rotating group can cause pressure/performance issues. I am assuming that you are using hygard low viscosity oil.

Should be a tag with the id on the transmission case.

Worst case. Deere lists the entire unit for $2154.35. Not sure about availability.

I have the Tech Manual for the GT245, and I can tell you this:

  • The tranny has internal filters that can't be changed without disassembling the entire tranny. I wouldn't undertake this procedure myself, but I'm a chicken when it comes to digging this deep into a machine.
  • The interval for changing the tranny fluid is 250 hours. If you're over that number of hours, I'd change the fluid. Or if you work your tractor hard with a lot of ground engaging tasks, this might require a more frequent interval.
  • If you follow the procedure in the Operator's Manual that came with your tractor, you will see a plug on the top left side of the tranny (when viewed from the rear). Your manual says not to remove that plug, and to only pour fluid in through the reservoir tank. This is BS. The Tech Manual specifically says to remove that plug and then pour 1.9 L of fluid into that hole. Be sure to clean the dirt from around the plug before you remove it. You will then add the rest of the tranny's 4.4 L of fluid in through the reservoir tank.
  • This observation is not from the Tech Manual but rather from other research I've done: Don't fill it with JD's Hy-Gard fluid. Instead us a synthetic 5w50 oil. I just used Castrol's 5W50 in mine. You won't find this fluid at Walmart.

Good luck!

I'm curious as to how you came to replace the Hy-Gard low viscosity oil with the 5w-50. Motor oil vs. hydrostat oil?

Apparently 5W50 has become Tuff Torq's recommended fluid. Check out post #25 from this thread:

Furthermore, if you do a Google search on "Tuff Torq 5W50", you'll see lots of references to where Tuff Torq has switched their recommendations from 10W30 (which is what Hy-Gard is) to 5W50 Synthetic, especially when pushing the tractor hard in ground-engaging applications. Since the GT245 is rated for ground engagement, this seems like a good idea. But regardless of whether using a tractor for ground engagement or not, I think 5W50 is a good, safe way to go. I'd put it in my tractor even if I was only using it to mow the lawn.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out.
