In VW world there are good water pumps and bad water pumps. I never paid attention to what made bad water pumps, maybe a plastic impeller that slips when hot. Injectors have been tested to properly spray and flow? I have a JD 870 with about the same hp and 5 foot slasher cutter. Never have I overheated it but sure have gotten the transmission case hot.

I have wondered about this also. The pump on the machine is new but is aftermarket. I have had very mixed results on these tractors with aftermarket parts. Some stuff was great and other stuff was such junk I could not use it. I did put a fresh coat of JD green on it before install so that should have made it work good!!! :D

It's time to buy an infrared thermometer and figure out where the problem is. It could be as simple as a defective idiot light switch and a poor rad cap.

Had one with me last time it got hot. Not sure I learned much except it was hot. Blew the fluid when I pulled the cap so it was holding pressure.

If you hold the gun on the thermostat housing you can see at what temperature the thermostat opens and closes. If you shoot the rad while it's pushing out the antifreeze you can see if the antifreeze is actually at a boiling temperature or if it's the rad cap not holding enough pressure.

How about the air intake system? Clogged air filter or debris or wasp nest anything that restricts air flow will over heat as you are experiencing. If you can shake dust or trash off the air filter easy most likely your problem.

Good one !!

The air filter looked to be clear so I do not think that was the culprit. Today I ordered a Radiator, OEM thermostat, OEM Radiator cap, muffler, air filter, rubber hood seals and temperature gauge. We will call this step 1. If this does not correct the issue then the head will come off. I plan on keeping this machine and I need it to work right. I hope I am not chasing my tail and that the cooling system design is just not up to the 95 degree heat. We shall see. I am sure many reader will think I am crazy for throwing money at this old machine but I am very impressed with it and it does exactly what I need.

there's always the electric radiator fan, and 3 or 4 core aluminum radiator option!. I think you are pushing the tractor beyond it's design limits for cooling, which can be increased!..

Before I did anything I called a racing buddy to ask him about aluminum radiators. He said they don’t transfer heat as well as copper/brass. You agree? I have already thought about an electric fan. If I don’t get his cooling to my satisfaction I’ll probably head down that road.

I put an electric fan on my Mahindra 45 HP tractor and I do not think it helped at all. On that tractor I got much better relief by taking off the two side covers.
