I was going to Use John Deere coolant. Honestly was going to do some more research on it and haven’t yet.

I was likely going to use my heavy duty SCA charged coolant for my fleet as an option but hadn’t looked into it yet

Pre-mix or Ready mix is the way to go for the old school green or the Prestone.

Yes, look into your HD SCA coolant for both temperature performance levels and corrosion protection.

Modern cooling systems are mostly all steel and aluminum. When brass or copper is added to these modern cooling systems, galvanic corrosion takes place. With that said, these older machines really rely on those corrosion protection additives to be there in good quantity. Replacement parts today are steel or aluminum. Thus the protection is needed more so than ever.

Got the rods back from the machine shop and started putting everything back together. New bearings showed perfect tolerances. Gapped the rings and got the bottom end buttoned up.

After I got the new head on everything was going well until it came to the intake manifold. It just wouldn’t tighten, tried several times until I took it back off and noticed it was cracked and spreading apart as I was torquing the nuts. Cleaned it up, welded the crack and resurfaced the gasket surface. I’ll put it back on in the morning and see how it goes. That’s all for tonight

Boy, lotsa cracking. Any idea what caused it? Bet you're glad you have the skill and equipment to do those good welds. I really dislike welding castings, especially old castings that have been on any kind of engine. You never know what kind of crud is going to be coming out. It doesn't look like that much dirt boiled out of your welds. Yesterday I had to weld up a defect in a brand new casting and it looked dirtier than your intake manifold welds. Good job on your part, I'm sure it will last the life of the engine.

i assume it was over tightened previously in its life but i can only speculate. The aluminum surprised me, it welded very clean. I AM glad, one of the best investments has been deciding to learn how to weld and purchase all the equipment. I don't know how mechanics live without the ability to weld, the possibilities are endless when it comes to making modifications and repairs.

See that SQ plug sticking out where the wire-harness goes to the inside of the dash. That is where the block heater goes. Those run about less than $40.

Oh, that all looks beautiful and clean.

Got her all buttoned up for the most part and running. She purrs like a kitten, nice and quiet, smooth and no smoke. I’m very happy, this was a fun little project. I tried to post a video but it won’t let me, any tips?

Now time to clean up some wiring and put the hood back on.

I am a day late,, but,,,,
Go to Tractor Supply, and read the jug of Rotella antifreeze, it explains the damage that you have seen on the cylinder liners.
Also, the Rotella antifreeze is considered "forever" antifreeze,,

I changed the antifreeze in my diesels when I read this,, as I am positive that previously, I had used typical automotive antifreeze,,
