I'm buying my first tractor and have a few questions. First of all, this tractor will be used to maintain 7 acres, mostly pasture. I've found an 85 JD 850 with 2100 hours for 5400$. Its a 22hp tractor, will this be enough for what I'll be using it for? Any problems with this model tractor I shoud be aware of? Thanks, Chris

crich68,
Welcome to TBN. Always glad to have another Deere owner, or prospective owner on board.
I know nothing of the 850 specifically. However, 22 hp is big enough to handle many different type implements, and should be able to maintain your pasture and more. Will it come with any implements? Is it 4WD.

Thanks for the welcome. I have not seen the tractor nor talked to the seller so I dont know about the implements. The tractor is 2WD.

The 850 can easily handle 7 acres.
26 gross HP
22 PTO HP.
My 850 runs a 72" finish mower, 5' brush mower, 60" tiller with no problem.

make sure it runs and you can take it for a little spin. Make sure the brakes and hydraulics works without spewing fluids all over the place. Push the front rims with your knee and make sure the bearings are OK. Look in the radiator, pull out the oil dipstick. Make sure there isn't rust floating in the radiator or white spots in the oil. Look at the guages to make sure they work. The tin can have some dings and scratches, but shouldn't look like someone cut losse with a splitting maul. Check the belts and hoses, tire wear. Is the seat all ripped up? Is the paint all faded?
Good luck!

Just got back from looking at the tractor. Everything is in working order. Test drove it in all gears low and high. Put a 5 ft bush hog on the back to check the PTO and lifted it up and shut the tractor and it held it up with no problem...didnt bleed down. The overall shape is good, paint a little faded with a few minor dings, seat was in good shape. I didnt think to check the dipstick but will check it before I buy. I plan on going back in a few days with the money. Also, rear tires about 70% and the front tires are almost new. He wants 5000$ for just the tractor or 5400$ for the tractor/bush hog. The bush hog is a 5 ft House. All gages-lights work. As long as it passes the dipstick test I'll bring it home. I feel like this is a fair price...what do ya'll think. Thanks again, Chris

I'd say that's a very fair deal... 'purt near a smoking deal.
The 50's are as near bulletproof as one can get. IMO. I'd buy another in a minute...
