I am considering the purchase of a JD 790 with sliding-gear transmission. (Also like the JD 4300, but price is better). I have read in old JD 770 info. that the "economical sliding-gear is for sustained speeds for long hours". I will be using the JD 790 for front end loader work and backing up in small areas along with some bush hog work. I will use the tractor 2 - 4 hours a week, and don't think I will mind shifting gears. Will the sliding-gear hold up for this type of work? Thanks in advance, John.

John, I ran a 970 with loader in tight quarters, mowed 5 acres for 5 years planted produce and cultivated it. I did alot of shifting to say the least, had 1000 hours when I sold it, never a problem with clutch operation in any way and still shifted smooth from gear to gear moving or not moving.
