I will start by saying I can take most anything apart and replace, but I'm no mechanic and I really know nothing about electrical (but I do have a voltage meter - don't know how to use it).

Here's the story. Live in Wisconsin. Night time. No light outside. Temperature 25 degrees. Tractor starts right up. Let it run until warm. Back up out of the machine shed pushing a 3 foot snow drift with the back blade. Engine dies. I could get it to start again and stay running as long as I have the key turned all the way on. Release key, engine stops running.

Google search - looks like ignition switch. Order on line.
Next day. 10 amp fuse to the engine preheat indicator (among other things) is blown. Also terminal to the alternator is broken off.

Replace both. Turn on engine - fuse blows, tractor starts but engine stops running as soon as I release key.
Replace ignition switch, same things happen.

More google - find technical manual. "Check fuel shut-off solenoid hold-in circuit".

I can't seem to paste a picture or attach it.
Anyway, I do not have a solenoid located on the right side of the engine above the fuel pump like in this picture.

Does this tractor have one, where is it located and what should I try next to figure out the problem.
Thanks

Is it possible that the solenoid is part of the starter and located on the back of the starter so it is not readily visible?

Just doing a google search. Only 3 degrees out today. Might be able to look at it tomorrow. Should be 20 degrees then!

The fuel shut off solenoid will be a separate component.
Do a google search and you will see pictures of them.
Small cylinder with wires on one end and a pin or rod on the other end which pushes on something to cut off the fuel.

There are no fuel lines going to or from the solenoid at all. I know that confused My brother-in law when he borrowed my JD and I told him to wire tie it on to finish the job. It only has some wires going into it on one side and works a rod that attaches to the injection pump from the other side. If you have someone start the machine while standing at the side you should be able to see it move when they turn the key to the start position and then retract when they let go of the key.

this should be what you see, if not can you post us a picture of that side?

Sounds like you hooked up the wires wrong on the ignition switch.
Thats why your ten amp fuse is blowing, its always on pe-heat.
Your injection pump solenoid is also connected to your ignition switch.
Re check your wiring job.
The terminal on the alt has me puzzled, was this broken before,,
depending on the terminal, it may also go to your ignition switch.

First make sure the battery is fully charged.

Can you hear the fuel solenoid click when the key is turned on?

I'm assuming the 10 amp fuse was found burned out from before any switch work was done.

Thinking of fusible link or solenoid failure??? Is it easy to pull the solenoid or access the electrical connections to it. You may be able to apply 12 volts to it and see if it works. If not manually work the solenoid to make sure it is free. Do not leave 12 volts going to the solenoid for very long as it will draw too many amps and burn out. The thermistor is supposed to limit the amperage the solenoid can draw after it is opened. That is if your tractor has a thermistor.

There are times the solenoid will not engage unless the battery is fully charged.

Disclaimer: I too can take many things apart but have difficulty putting them back together. I am definitely not a mechanic.

It finally warmed up enough for me to get to the tractor.

I found the fuel shutoff solenoid.

My tractor hood says this is a 755. My fuel solenoid is where an 855 should be.

However, it appears that my problem is the fuel pump from the radiator to the fuel filter.

So, now I need to figure out if I have an 855 engine or a 755!!??

Ignition switch to starter to alternator.

My fuel shut-off solenoid is where it would be for an 855 engine, but my hood says I have a 755!

More detective work.
