Working on JD 5093e Limited (340000+/2010-2011) and the steering return line is leaking from the ferrule/crimp. The part number for this hose is either RE224842 or SJ12165. My fittings look more like the open operator SJ12165. Regardless, I'll likely get the replacement hose made locally. My questions are 1) how long to allow for removal and replacement of the hose? 2) any special tools required? 3) any other tips or recommendations? Looks like if I approach from the left side I have to remove the two steering lines to get to the return line. If I approach from the right side I have to remove two air conditioning lines and maybe a wire harness. Taking to dealer is not an option....too far. Thanks in advance for any information.

The first P/N RE224842 is for serial number 340000 or lower. The second, P/N SJ12165 is for serial number 340001 and higher.
I would order the JD part.

I Never worked on one of these, but I would NOT disturb the AC lines.

Here are a couple of pics. Looks like this may be a non-JD hose already replaced with a swivel added. Tractor Serial is --340242. Tractor as 6000+ hours and the AC lines are a little brittle. Would like to get ontop and avoid the AC lines and the other two steering lines on the right. But before I start I want to know if this connector requires replacement O rings. It looks like the later models do not use the O ring but my current connector looks like the older (pre-34000) and open operator hose. Thanks

See if these attachments help show the difference between the two types and why I'm confused:

You have it backwards. Later models, 340001 and up, hose, P/N SJ12165, use an O-ring. They are ORFS 8 (1/2") hose end. O Ring Face Seal. The O ring is P/N T77857. .489" ID .629" OD .070 thickness (diameter of o-ring stock used to make it). This is the end at the steering valve. I ASSUME other end is also same size.

JD parts has you use the late hose and change the adapter to P/N 38H5003 which is a metric port to ORFS straight adapter. If you have a 340000 or lower serial number.

The hose end at the steering valve is ORFS 8. It will be a female swivel. I can't tell what angle, but it does not appear to be straight.

I would ASSUME the other end will also be ORFS 8

A John Deere dealer parts department should be able to give all the specs for this hose from the P/N. Length. Each end fitting.

Thanks! That helps and the line sump side is female with about 3" of straight from the connection into a 45 degree. So I think the hose on there now is either backwards/reversed or is a non-JD replacement. Concluding I Have to pull it off, park the tractor, determine the type of connectors then order or have made. Thanks for the response.

Just an FYI the thread size for ORFS 8 is 13/16"-16; threads per inch. From the picture sounds like it might installed backwards. But all it has to do is fit.

A hydraulics shop should be able to provide correct o-ring just asking for ORFS 8 or 1/2"

Is the leak at the crimp (fitting to hose) or the fitting? It might be just loose or need a new o-ring, unless it is the crimp.

Thanks Zebrafive. I got some better conditions rolling in in about 48 hours. I'm going to keep the tractor under cover until then and then get it up next to the house/shop outside for a couple days if it takes a day or two to get it apart and find a replacement. The hose is leaking at the ferrule/crimp but the connections are dry. The pictures show hydro fluid around the valve but that appears to be leak down from the hose end of the crimp. The current line is labeled at 3/8" hose so this has to be a replacement. Kinda feel like I looked into everything I could to prepare to do in one morning (get parts in advance) but with the extra connector between the hose end and the adapter at the valve end I don't think I'll really know until I get it off. Thanks for the responses.

Grabbed a couple of pics of the return-line side of the hose. "Atlaflex 3/8"" on the hose and the angle of the attachment to the return to the sump. Not in a hurry but just wondering if this hose was 1) replaced already? 2) when installed put on backwards?. Again, I'm not getting into this for another 48 hours but it's just kind of funny looking compared to either of the possible part # replacement diagrams.
Hey Zebrafive... if you follow up, just post on tractor.net forum because I can't get Greentractor Talk forum to load on my phone. I do appreciate the info your sharing because you keep coming up with a couple different ways I can work with the changes somebody else has already made on this tractor (6000+ hours). Thanks!

Zebrafive you were exactly right! The set up was just as you said (SJ12165) and the replacement hose was installed backwards. Once I got the hose off it turned out the ferrule/crimp was just the collecting site of the fluid. Because the hose was installed backwards it was rubbing on the support frame for the hood and wore a hole in the hose and was tracking down to the ferrule crimp. I couldn't see the puncture because of the hood frame and the AC hoses. Turns out getting the hose off was the easy part. Turns out too that this hose was a lot closer to rupturing than I thought.
New Problem:
To Access to steering valve I removed the extension pipe from the muffler and snapped off one of the bolts into the manifold. Tried drilling out. Tried extractors. Have it bathed in liquid wrench. I'll the replacement hose made up tomorrow.
Any more recommendations on backing out this sheared bolt would be appreciated.
