Tractor
John Deere 5045E
I own a 10 acre small horse farm. First time buying a tractor. I'm sick of pushing and unloading round bales using my 4 wheeler!! I know very little about tractors other than I know I need one. Will be using it to stack round bales, light box blading, and bushhogging on some light to moderate hills. I am torn between the kubotA mx4700e and the John Deere 5045e. Both are 4 wheel drive. I would love to hear owners of these tractors pros and cons. I have found the prices to be somewhat comparable so initial price isn't too much of a deciding factor. Thanks for any input you guys could offer.

The Deere is quite a bit larger heavier and stronger than the MX. However the kubota is very strong for its size and has the option of gear or hst. I've double stacked 5x6 bales on my trailer with my MX kubota. Does pretty well as long as I keep a bale or heavy implement on the back. If I were going to be moving lots of round bales regularly I would want a bigger tractor. Probably even bigger than the 5045 Deere. For the rest of your tasks I would prefer the kubota personally.

Interesting, I talked to the kubotA dealer today and they said the kubotA is heavier, stronger etc than the Deere but yes that was the kubotA dealer talking. That's why I'm here to get several opinions. Thanks for yours!! Love to hear from others.

I agree, except I prefer the Deere.:D
I won't agree with the Kubota dealer.
Just looking at the spec. sheets: The deere weighs 5070lbs, The Kubota 3620lbs. The wheelbase is also different, with the Deere being 81in and Kubota being 74.6in.
If you want a Hydro trans, you won't find one in a 5E. The Kubota is smaller and more nimble. The 5E is more like a old school utility tractor, that compares more to a M series than a MX.
Check them both out. Like everything else, each has it's good and bad points depending on what you are trying to do.

If you like the MX4700 also check out the MX5100 - little more HP, few minor differences and does not cost much more. I also agree the Deere is heavier and larger, both are nice tractors and have their advantages. For my use the MX won out but not because there is a thing wrong with the Deere.

I own a MX5100 Kubota 4wd, the big brother to the 4700. It is a beast. 52 hp with a turbo.I chose gear drive because I'm old school. I like dedicated power. A really great tractor, for not much more money. Check it out if the 4700 is a bit weak. By the way, I will admit I ONLY buy Kubota. I respect the green guys, it's just what I prefer. Good luck.

John Deere is definitely the heavier tractor. Better for moving bales. I would compare a M series to it. And maybe load the tires either way you go. The extra weight of the front end loader puts more weight on the front axle.

Thanks guys. Well def leaning more towards the Deere now or at least at the m series. My main problem is that I feel like I'm paying for that green paint a little more than I should be. The main reason I've been geared more toward the kubotA is because of the package deals a lot of dealers offer with the loader bushhog box blade and trailer. Wish Deere would offer that with the 5045. Also like the hydro feature but I could live without it I guess.

Any dealer should make a package deal.

I have a 10 acre horse and donkey farm. About a year ago I was finally able to buy the tractor I have been wanting forever. Same situation, we were tired of moving round bales by rolling them across the ground. I had been considering a Kubota MX5100 or a Kioti DK40SE, but I found a good deal on a used Kubota M6040, and that's what I bought. We fed a lot of round bales last winter, and I'm glad we have the full size utility tractor. It will safely handle the big round bales with just loaded rear tires. No counterweight is needed on the three point. I just think the MX is a bit on the light side for moving round bales with the loader. It could be done, but you would need a lot if weight on the 3 point to counterbalance.

The Deere 5e series would handle the round bales just as well as the M6040 - it is a heavy full size tractor, and more comparable to my M6040 than the MX4700/5100. The M6040 is a bit nicer than the Deere, with a fully synchronized transmission and hydraulic shuttle shift, telescoping draft links, and quick attach loader.

Thanks for the input. Gonna look a lot closer at the 5045 after reading yalls input. I appreciate it guys. Now let me see if I can get Deere to put together some kind of package deal for me.

I would also look at the Kioti tractors. The models RX6010(60hp)and DK50se(HST)50 hp.They have a free loader program until august 31st.2013.I just bought my second Kioti tractor, heres a pic on my DK40 HST.coobie

While I really like my JD 5045E for your sized operation both would serve. The big difference is the lift capacities of the 3PH and the loaders. The Kubota loader will lift 2443 lbs and the JD 553 will lift 4008.
As to the price difference I think they are both worth the price asked as they are not an apples to apples comparison. Mine bought last year with loader and 72 inch cutter was under 30K and at zero percent.
If you can sit on both and pick up a round bale with the loader. That should tell you a lot.

Something to consider if you decide on JD. The 553 loader on the JD is quick attach. There is also QA on the bucket. You can choose JD style, Global carrier, or SSQA. I went with SSQA because I already owned forks and several buckets that were of that style.

Another thing, is that the very same tractor is available with a 45, 55, 65, or 75HP engine. Think about any future PTO driven attachments that you will need, and what the required PTO HP will be to run them. :reading:
My tractor came with loaded 16.9-28; R1 tires I rarely need to use a counterweight or 4wd.

Another vote for the JD. I first went route of a 2WD 5105 and then later added a JD 512 loader. In the end it was a workable unit, but I wanted a 4WD. Started looking and found a excellent deal on a 4WD JD 5303 with a JD 522 loader. I have been very pleased with it. I highly recommend the 16.9-28 tires for rear if buying new or if possible on a used unit. The extra width and weight when filled help a lot with traction. The 2.9 engine in these units have been around for a very long time and seem to be very reliable. Good luck.

I've a M4700.

As you noticed the MX4700 is a little light in the shorts. Even my M4700 is lighter than the Deere. However lift capacity of my M is greater than the JD, perhaps due to emissions etc.

It reads like the Deere is the better fit for you, even if it costs a bit more.

I will say I looked at the 5e deeres when shopping last year. I like every thing about them except the trans which hate but that's totally personal preference. If I would have bought an ag utility size machine it would have been a kubota m7040suhd with hydraulic shuttle. With loader ssqa and loaded rears it was at $32k which is about the same as a 5045 Deere optioned the same in my area. However, both of these tractors were out of my price range so I settled on an mx5100 and I am very happy with it. If I ever need a bigger tractor ill wait until I can afford somethin about 85hp and keep the MX because its such a do it all machine
