jd 50 running rough

I remember my grandfather's "B" and Model 50 never had any carb gum-up problems. But in modern times, gasoline composition has changed.

Is it the modern gasoline that is causing the problem? I know on my "50", I have to drain the fuel from the tank and the carb bowl if it's going to sit for a period of time.

Comments or experiences anyone?

That's my idea as well.. i think fuel chemistry is way different than inthe 50's.. etc.

I also drain my B carb after use..

well after soaking the carb for a few days, it got cleaned out rather well. one of the jets was almost plugged soild, i had got a new one so i put that in and cleaned out the old one for a spare. also washed the tank and bowl clean, put it all back together and now runs great. the newer fuel def does have its drawbacks. we use the 50 very regularly in the spring/summer months so the fuel isn't an issue. but when sitting for the winter months and olny being used a few times a month for firewood and loading the wood shed, it always seems to run poor because of the fuel. from now on gas will be drained and petcock shut off.
