JD 455 pto

Last week when I mowed PTO kicked out when running full bore. Later even when mowing slower it kicked out and engine would sometimes stop.
Thought it might have just been a fluke, but today after 15 min of mowing it start kicking out again. After about three times engine would kill also. When restarting, engine would fire then kill until I throttled back. Limped it back to garage.

Fluids ok. temp cool. Air flow sensor ok.
All was serviced 24 hrs ago when purchased. 600 hrs total.

455 is the Yanmar engine. Bullet proof, one of the best out there. So it is unlikely an engine problem.

My first guess is the safety cut-out (operator) switch on the seat. Could be going bad or out of adjustment. Check that first.

I'll do that. It doesn't seem to be related to the way I'm seated. Unless it is truely intermitant.

What other circuits are in the safety loop? I originally had trouble with the forward/reverse switch dropping out the pto. I think that might be jumpered. I can't seem to find it now. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How about fuel filter? Can that make the pto drop before killing engine?

Just looked at the seat switch. It does look like it would be easy to trip. It's way in the back.

On my X595 I can kill the deck by backing up without engaging the "reverse do-dicky" switch. Bad switch there?

I believe the 455 has the same rear axle as the X series. There is a solenoid (sp?) that is activated to engage the hydro PTO....is it the same for the 455? Bad solenoid (internal) or bad external wiring (shorting to the frame).

I recall a few months back where one 455 owner had a similar problem. Turned out some insulation wear AND corrosion was causing the deck to disengage.

I obviously am misunderstanding as you indicate you purchased this tractor 24 hours ago, yet you mowed with it last week?

I suggest methodically going from safety switch to safety switch, and checking each out. For example, I'd start by jumpering the seat switch. Then moving to the 'reverse switch' that you indicate doing something with previously. Then move from one to another. The description of your problem could be several different things wrong. IMO.
It may be a loose wire going to the electric clutch for the PTO.

I think thats normal. My switch was so far off at first, pto would disengage by just slowing down. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think that was it. Seat switch.

Took it out and ohmed it. Worked fine, but there was one spot when pushing it in slow, where meter would bounce. Not a solid on/off signal.

Just banged it around, hard in out, by tapping on it. Got pretty rough with it. It started switching cleanly.

Mowed a half hour today without issues. I did baby it though.
Now that I am aware of seat switch it is a wonder it works as well as it does. Butt does a lot of bouncing when mowing full bore. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
