Before you just start putting it back together, was the engine burning oil?

Can't tell from the photo, have you pull off the head? If so, now would be a good time to lap the valves.

The engine was burning no oil between oil changes.

Is there a serial number or some way of telling if these motors have the plastic cam gears. Guessing they switched to metal at a certain time. Knowing that some want to be proactive and replace before major problems. Kinda sucks to pull apart only to find they have the metal already...!

I'm sorry

I'm sorry

Didn't mean anything by that.
Thinking I read once that there was a sequence in serial numbers and year of production that they went from plastic to metal gears.

If there was plastic and somebody changed them you'd have no way knowing unless they documented it in some way..

From what I could decipher on the s/n, the year my 425 was made was before the switch to steel cam gear.. which iirc was mid '98. Mine was s/n 419xxx so '96 model.
I made the assumption mine was still the plastic.. and I admit I did not go through the dealer to have the s/n searched to see if Deere had a record of changing this one out for steel.. I know there are records kept, but only if Deere dealer made the repair.

I'm interested too because I have the same motor only on a Woods Zero Turn. I'm up in the 900 hr. range..!

I think you meant 1998 & 1999 not '68 & '66 Were you holding your phone upside down when you replied?
