My 1999 JD 4300 HST engine dies when the PTO is engaged. I have checked the seat switch and it appears to be functioning correctly. Any suggestions what to check next would be appreciated.

I've a 4100 hydro and I'm thinking it has to be a safety switch. On my 2000 year model I can tip the seat forward and pull up on the switch as you would if you were using an implement that required you to be off the seat. Have you tried pulling up on the switch until it clicks, then engage the pto?

Have you tested the switch with a meter to ensure it opens and closes as designed?

Have you looked at a wiring diagram to see if there are any other safety switches?

My 4310 had the same issue in the winter. It was the seat safety switch. Take a small piece of wire strip the insulation off both ends. Disconnect the seat safety switch and use the wire as a jumper to the two leads and try it again. That would be the first thing I would do.

Thank you all for suggestions. I tested the seat switch with an ohm meter but will try jumpering it out today as suggested.

My safety switch was checking out Ok with my ohm meter as well when I had to run a jumper on mine. As the seats get older on these JD tractors they seem to loose some of their softness and you won't be able to compress the seat enough to get the safety switch to disengage. For me in the summer it works fine. In winter like temps I have to use a jumper.

There's also a neutral safety switch if the seat switch checks out. I'm not sure where it's located on the hydro models.

to see the neutral safety switch you have to look up through the cut out area under the bottom of the tranny housing to the side of the hydro

OK...got on the tractor this afternoon and PTO worked as designed. Did some mowing around house (sickle bar) and worked great. Shut off PTO and went down to lake to try mowing the phragmities and engaged the mower...shutdown. Back to garage and wired around the seat switch...no change. Putting in neutral and set park brake...shuts down. Unplugged the PTO switch under left side of the seat am
Nod wired around it and PTO now works fine but no safety. Noted that with seat switch open (or unplugged and not jumpered) the tractor still will go fore and aft...state switch seems non active.

When I frist got this tractor used from a local dealer it had an intermittent problem of stalling when attempting to go forward or reverse. Started out as an occasional PIA that would come and go but got worse till it was chronic and couldn't move tractor. I wired the solenoid hold coil to the battery with a plug connector, got the machine back to the house, and had dealer pick up. Of course it worked fine for him when he pit the wiring back to OE. I insisted he try using it every day...he did and it failed finally. His tech found a pinched wire and he ordered a new harness ant it was fixed. I used the unit mowing (belly mower) late into the fall and pulled the mower. This is the first I've tried to use the PTO since.

Sorry for the ramble...any new ideas? I'm going to study the wiring diagrams in the manual (thank you Joe) and try to make sense of it. I'm just an ME and these electrical gadgets just drive me nuts...especially these nested safety circuits.
