Kubota L4400HST
Good morning all,

We are looking for a tractor and have come up with either the 4105 or the 4005. Both fit our needs well but I have a concern over drive train. One is 4cyl (4005, Yanmar 4TNV88) and the other is a 3cyl (4105, Yanmar 3TNV84T-KJT). I realize output is nearly identical and both should live up to its name but what I want to know is which engine is more popular throughout the JD line-up, both past and present?

I would think a powerplant that has been used previous and has proven itself as reliable would be the better choice overall.

What do you think? Any other tractors you think I should be taking a look at that perhaps I have overlooked?

By the way, wonderful forum with loads of information.

I would consider the engines a minor difference compared to the overall tractors. Really depends on whether you want a gear tractor or hydro tractor. Have you looked at the 4120 through 4720 models?

I am leaning towards gear, so that essentially means the 4005 model. My budget is not allowing for too much more of a tractor and I am afraid the "boss" might start asking questions.

I am not looking for the difference, just the amount an engine us used in other platforms. This can often make parts availability better and possibly cheaper.

I purchased 4105 in April .I am very happy with it
As far as power I run out of traction before loose power
I love way that turbo sounds.

The Yanmar 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder diesel's have been used in JD CUT's since the 70's. They have all proven to be very durable, long-service engines.

Most of the engines have varied only by a handful of cubic inches or the addition of a turbocharger.

That said; it is not likely a realistic "deal changer" to base your decision on the superiority of the Yanmar engine in the 4005 versus the 4105 - IMO. Hp, torque, fuel economy are close enough that for the majority of uses that these tractors have -- it's gonna be a toss up.

And a matter of personal preference...

Yanmar engines have been used in agricultural, industrial and marine applications for decades. They are extremely reliable and fuel frugal engines. Even the engines used in (at least some) of the Deere CUTs are also used in industrial and marine applications.
The 4005 tractor is not a new machine. It's been around for at least 10 years as the 990.
I think you'd find the 4005 to be an excellent choice.

I am just getting back into "newer" tractors and I had no idea is was just a new designator. I suppose that explains why I am not finding much information on the 4005. Once I searched for 990 the information flowed like water!

I am still overseas on business but I get back at the end of next week. My local dealer has a 4005 waiting for me to check out.

Thanks for the information!

I would take a good look at the 4005. A proven tractor that is hardly ever mentioned here at TBN. (that's a good thing.)

4005 is a good tractor, it's one I'm considering too. Let us know what you decide

I sure will. As of now, my order of preference is the JD 4005, Kubota L4400, MF 1643, and the Mahindra 4035.

The JD looks like a solid piece of equipment that is built they way I prefer it, simple. The Kubota is a contender as well, maybe a little more ease of operation than the simple 4005. The MF is just there to go look at but I doubt I will really consider it. Price is high and the dealer is a good bit away from me. The Mahindra is only there because I have spent a lot of time in India and have seen how they do over there. I am not excited about the added weight and lack of parts and service. Worth a couple hours of my time to check out at any rate.

No reason to stress over something fun, right? I have plenty of time and an understanding wife...

I just bought a 4005 and posted on here about it recently. I'll attach some photos my wife took where I am mowing for what will be a prescribed burn firebreak. This fall the contractor will use a tractor mounted tiller where I mowed the paths. I used to have a 790 but I needed to skid some big logs, and even when they were cut to 10' lengths that darn tractor didn't want to pull them, let alone lift them.

As for this compared to the 4105, I don't know? I like the yanmar 4 cylinder engine, and I actually didn't want hydrostatic so the choice was clear for me. I think the 4105 would be fine if you preferred hydrostatic to gears - I doubt the engine difference is worth worrying about.

Thanks everyone.

As I said, I am out of the country at the moment so my wife is calling around and making sure the dealers have what we want to look at, if not, where we can find it at. Everyone was helpful (JD knows us) except for MF.

She called MF and every dealer within 200 miles was rude and reluctant to help her. If we are having a hard time with the dealer while trying to spend $25,000 why would I think they will be easy to deal with for warranty/parts/service after the sale? My wife said no MF, so I guess it is down to JD, Kubota, and maybe Mahindra.

Best wishes in your choice.

So here is where I am...

I finally made it back to the good ole USand went tractor shopping the same day. I went to 2 JD dealers and 1 Kubota dealer.

The first JD dealer had the 4005 but did not have a 4105. No worries, I looked and drove the 9005 and generally liked the tractor. It felt solid. The operator station felt a bit confined and the placement of the FEL handle as a bit close to my right leg.

They called another JD dealer close by and the had a 4105 so we drove there even though they offered to ship it over in a couple days. I felt it was easier to just drive there instead of making them haul it in just for a test drive.

I crawled around the 4105 and got ready to drive it around a bit. It had .3 hours on it. It drove fine for about 5 minutes. Long story short, the brackets and pins for the HST pedels got jacked up somehow and it was stuck in gear with about 20% force applied. It was shut down safely without incident. The salesman offered for a drive on a 3038E to get a little more time in so I took him up on it. No reason not to drive a tractor, right? This one had .8 hours on it and the tach did not work. I drove it anyway and it met what I had thought it would for being a smaller tractor. While I was messing with the 3038E a tech came out to the parking lot and sorted the brackets and pins out on the 4015 so I have it another whirl. I gave it 10 minutes or so and then I had my wife have a go. After 5 minutes the brake pedel seized tight as could be and the machine was stranded in the parking lot once again.

Not impressed? You betcha.

So we went to Kubota and had a go on a L4400HST and am really digging it. I have not made a final decision yet but I am leaning to the Orange tractor at this time. Time will tell, I am thinking mid next week I will be signing a sales slip for something!

Don't give up on it
It is easy to leave the parking bake it also has like a came mechanism on it more you push it more it clicks tighter it get it is a bear to get off.
The dealer showed me that
Mine is a sweet running machine

I wish it was just the parking brake... I looked at it, the salesman looking at it, the tech came back out from the shop and looked at it.

Whatever the problem was it was a bit more involved. They were really quiet about it and shuffled us away while another tech came out to help.

I am not saying I am 100% done with looking at JD but you have to admit that it would leave a bad taste in your mouth.

You won't go wrong with a 4005. Kubota makes good ones too.

I bought a used 4105 and love it . My wife drives it alot . Its very smooth , powerful . I came off a 2 wheel drive ford 3000 . The 4105 has more power than the OLD 3000 and the 4x4 is great !

Selecting the tractor is part of the fun!
I completely understand about that JD experience turning you off. It would've me too. But,I'm glad it didnt happen to me as I would have missed out on a great tractor. Just remember, most tractors are gone over and set up after purchase....there are usually options added at that time,so the dealership waits to do final "make ready" then. What happened on the deere can happen on other brands as well. But either way....you cant go wrong with most brands today. Have fun and good luck!!!
