Trying to service the gearbox on an 1970 vintage John Deer 301AG. There is a cap behind the seat. Is this where the Xmsn is service, and if so what fluid, and how much? Thanks.

That is the fill cap. There is a transmission filter and also a suction screen that should be changed/cleaned. I would use John Deere hy gard. (latest spec from JD) The old tractors spec was JD 303 trans/hyd fluid. It should hold ten gallons. There is a dip stick on the right side at the rear of the foot rest. Screws in. Check with engine idling and set cap on do not screw in.

I think 8 gallons will be closer to capacity than 10. 10 gallons is dry fill and it's difficult once the oil is in the trans to get it ALL out. Screen is parts key 15
