I just got a 285 lawn tractor with 629 hrs on it that has not run for 5 years and it was running when they stopped using it. It has always kept inside. they tried to start it about a year ago and It wouldn't start. I have a bad foot so I'm not messing with it now till my foot gets better 4 more weeks.Just wondering where to start and how to go about it to get it back into running shape. The owners taught it might be a ignition module but they didn't know for sure.
Any help would be helpful
Thanks
Gary

:welcome:

Sorry to hear about the foot.

Sounds like a typical sales story...running fube when we parked it, tried to start it and now something is wrong....:)

First, need to find out if this 285 is fuel injected or not. Let us know.

If they didn't drain the 5 yr old fuel when they tried to start it, then prolly the carb is gunked up and needs cleaning.

But drain the fluids and put in new.

Then check for spark at both plugs. If spark, then seems the ignition module would be ok. Get spark first.

Then when getting a spark, add a small teaspoon or so of gas in both cylinders before putting the plugs back. See if the engine will start then. If so, then start checking the fuel line...put in new filter, see if gas is getting through to the carb. If so, then look into rebuilding the carb.
