My JD 265 has 640 hours on its Kawasaki 17HP single cylinder engine. Knock on wood, it runs like a Swiss watch. Does anyone have experience as to the longevity of this engine when properly maintained? When should I anticipate a rebuild?

Sorry I cant answer your question, but I have a JD 240 that has the kawasaki 420 14HP motor in it. Very similar to yours. Dad purchased new in 1989 and has mowed his 3.5 acres with until 2004 when he bought a ZTR. I bought the 240 and have been mowing my 3 acres with ever since.

It doesn't have an hour meter on it so I cant say for sure, but in 6 yrs, his ZTR has 600 hrs on it and he mowed the same lawn with the JD for 15 years. So I'd venture a guess of 1500-2000hrs on it and it still runs great and doesn't use a drop of oil. It has been well taken care of.

That's good enough for the girls I go with. I have heard from others the Kawasaki industrial 14HP and 17HP are just as bullet-proof as the HST those models came with.
