JD 2520 gas cap/hood clearance problem

So what do you think would happen if one were to just unbolt the connection at the firewall.

Hey bz1,I was thinking of doing just that.
After I finished putting the washers in place,I wanted to see what retightening the middle bolt might change. It didn't change anything,so I just left it at that.

Hey Danny
I take it your reply was to my question.
I thought that is what you did.
Hey,that's about the easiest fix on the list, that gives the same results, but I want to know why there is a problem.
There are probably thousands with this problem, and it needs fixed. Hey I could file mine too,but that doesn't fix the issue. Maybe I'm too **** about things, but that's just the way I am.:)

I replied to a post about this some time ago. Myself and the OP seemed to be the only ones with the problem. I did what seemed like the quickest, easiest fix. I agree, with as many owners as there are now stepping forward, there should be a factory fix.

Similar was the lift arms rubbing the rear tires. I had to prove to my dealer this was a real problem as he claimed I was the only one complaining. They eventually traded me my original arms for the new designed arms. I had to remove the old ones and bring them in for a direct exchange.

As for the ROPS folding pins not aligning, I just went to work on that too while I had the round file out. I put the pin in one side, then filed the other side so it would accommodate the pin. How often do you see a guy post a picture of his proud tractor out working and the ROPS is folded. I hate seeing those photos. Almost as much as seeing people take their kids/grandkids for a ride in their lap.

Enough ranting now .....

Well,that's me too.
I have so many trees with low branches, that when I mow,I have to have them folded. If I didn't,I'd have a real mess. Even folded, I have to be careful around the fruit trees.
I don't have any hills,and I don't fly around,so I think I'm OK.

That's one thing different about my 2008 2520 and my new one. On the old one those ROP pins lined up perfect whether it was up or down. My new one line up reasonably well when up but can't even get one pin in place with it folded down. This is a nuisance but I just plan to use one pin on one side when the ROP is down. Anyone think this is a problem? I'm hoping that after some time the holes on the side I use will wear some and eventually the pin will fit on the other side. One would think that JD could assemble the fixed pin on the ROPs first and drill the others undersized, then ream all the holes for up and down position so they all line up. I guess it would add cost however.

That is what I had to do to both sides.

I stopped by the dealer today and the service manager said that he would put in a DTAC (Deere Technical Assistance xx) on my tractor for this issue. He said doing a DTAC makes JD have to answer the complaint and asked me to check back with him in two weeks. Maybe we should all have the dealers do DTAC's for this issue then JD would realise how wide spread this problem really is. Service manager was surprised to hear that there are pages of threads on this issue and JD hasn't done anything yet. I asked why and he said that JD does monitor online forums for issues and I said well they just missed this one.

So bottomline is have your dealer do a DTAC for this and maybe we will see a fix.

Stopped at the dealer today for some parts and was talking to a salesman I know about this issue and he never heard of it. He suggested we look at the 2720 outside. Low and behold the hood and cap hit.

This tractor is sold and I suggested they fix it before the new owner bends the hood. I think I embarrassed him as he is their hot shot salesman.

Every 2520 and 2720 has this issue to some extent. It took 20 minutes to remove the two supports and decrease the bend in the bracket ( the pseudo 90 deg. bend) in the vise. My cap is nearly centered and hasn't moved back yet. It might over time and then I will make a heavier bracket for it.

Well I was saying that my problem only recently started.... I also encountered a new problem which I think is related. While filling the tank with the marvelous new cans, I overfilled. Usually this just goes through the overflow tube and onto the ground.... not this time. It went all over the sides of the tank as the overflow tube was "plugged" after lifting the hood and inspecting the tube I see the overflow collar turned itself so the hose goes to its straight "resting" position rather than towards the operator. When this happened it allowed the overflow tube to be wedged between the hood support and the tank, hard enough that it permanently deformed the tube and rubbed a nice shiny spot on the tank. I think slamming the hood down with this hose in that position shifted my tank forward by bending the brackets ever so slightly. Anyone else notice this?

goldenwings, nope, my overflow tube always stayed where it belonged.
