JD 2520 gas cap/hood clearance problem

   / JD 2520 gas cap/hood clearance problem #11
I've got the same problem on my 2520 that I'm just about to trade in on another one. Mine is pretty minor in that the hood just hit the gas cap enough to create a small bend in the metal and has not touched again since. It will be interesting to see if my new one is different.

It is the bracket material JD used to secure the tank.It isn't strong enough.
There is a thread on another site showing a fix,but I can't post it here.:(

Greg

Could you just cut and paste the fix? Then there is no link to worry about.

I did a google search for this and came up dry. I am assuming that we are talking about the front brackets that are just cheap z-shaped steel. The rear supports are welded tabs on a round tube. If you lift the hood and pull/push on the tank I can see these front supports flex a lot. Mine does not hit but the tank is off center in the hole and is close to the hood.

Hey PCABE

That is basically what the deal is.

Google this:

2520 and 2720 fuel tank mounting

Thanks I was just searching for the cap and not the mount.

I was thinking the new EPA cans rest right on the tank while filling. This adds lots of weight to the front tank mounts. Maybe that is why mine started to flex.

UPDATE:

Sent email to my salesman and he forwarded it to JD. JD wants to come and get the tractor for a day to investigate the fuel tank. He said this should lead to a DTEC solution and that if others are having the problem take it to the dealer so it can get documented otherwise I do not know if this will do much if mine is the only reported case.

Awesome PCABE! I will be doing the same.
I was Googling to find out what a DTEC is. It's actually a DTAC:
Dealer Technical Assistance Center.

So John Deere thenselves are picking up your tractor?
Anxious to hear what they say.

My mistake, to many acronyms. Yes the dealer was told to come get it for the day by JD. I'll let you know what I find out.

I just traded my old 2520 for a new one today. While cleaning up my old one yesterday I noticed my clearance problem had gotten worse. Hard to open the hood with the fuel cap in place. I let the dealer take it that way and then checked my new 2520. The fuel cap is already almost hitting the hood. I think they have a fit problem that makes it start out real close and get worse as that bracket bends. My new machine is built exactly the same so JD does not seem to realize they have a problem that needs fixing yet. The tank sure seems like it is mounted very solid. I think I'll look at the parts breakdown and see if I can tell exactly how the thing is mounted. I see the bent brackets that everyone is talking about and they sure aren't very sturdy but the tank is more solid than these brackets would indicate.

OK, I just looked at the online parts diagrams. The fuel tank has 5 mounting points with 6 bolts. There are two mounting points on each side, one of them is on the bent bracket in question, the other is a direct vertical support further down and toward the rear of the tank. Then the front of the tank is supported by a bracket that attaches to the heat shield/firewall with two bolts. It vertically supports the front of the tank. I don't see how the tank can possible tilt forward unless the front firewall support is bending. It cannot move given how it is attached to the firewall. Others please take a look and see what you think.
