JD 240 skid steer

My understanding is the early, nonseries II, had multiple problems in the early production. Does anyone have information on problems with these skid steers? I'm looking at a 1999 model with 900 hours. Used by homeowner on a few acres.

I have heard the same thing about early Deere skid steers but don't know details on what the problems were. The early Deere skid steers were built in eastern TN and the Series-IIs had production moved to Dubuque, IA with the majority of Deere's yellow iron production.

You may want to look at New Holland LX665 or LS170 loaders, as well. They are very similar in design and lift capacity.

Stay away from '99-00 Deere Skid Steers-Deere was "getting it right" through those years, meaning it was a clean sheet design and they had to go through growing pains and fix the problems-eithere they were great machines or the owners had a lot of problems-you can tell the year by looking at the first digit of the last six numbers of the Serial number-if it's a one or a two be careful!

After those years they became very good units-we sell a bunch of them and have very little problems-

I think I am going to pass on the 1999 JD 240 skid steer. I really avoid models with known problems. The 240 is also a little small for my needs.

The early 200 Series Deere skidsteers (Series I) did have problems that were eventually corrected with the introduction of the 200 Series II. Deere moved the manufacturing of the skidsteers to its Dubuque, Iowa factory that also produces rubber tired backhoes and dozers, among other products. Typically, the Tenessee/Kentucky units had a SN starting with KV. Most of the Dubuque units start with a SN of T0. Hope this helps!
