JD 2305 Antifreeze Leaking When Cold. Waterpump?

Hello -

I own a 2006 JD 2305 with about 1200hrs. I noticed it occasionally leaks antifreeze. The leak seems like it is coming from beneath the water pump. Or, it could be where the pump attaches to the engine (gasket).

The leak is not consistent. As I mentioned, it seems to happen when cold. When it leaks, it's minor. The antifreeze puddle is about the size of a quarter.

Has a similar situation ever happen to anyone? Is this leak a sign that the water pump is about to fail??

I am thinking of just going ahead and replacing the water pump. While I have it apart, besides the fan belt, pump, pump gasket, is there anything else I should consider replacing (I am thinking thermostat as well).

Can't answer your question about the water pump, but if it were me, I'd first go around and make sure everything is nice and tight (ie:hose clamps, bolts, etc), just to eliminate the potential simple fixes first.

just saying have you tested your Antifreeze freezing point ? it could be getting slouchy at low temp causing additional pressure causing it to leak ?

I agree, check clamps for tightness. Before swapping the pump, I would use a flexible mirror to find the weep point. It is common for a leak to spew right after a tractor is at full operating temperature and shut off because the pressure spikes then. That would be a good time to look at it too.

In addition to all the above...

Lots of water pump housings have a weep hole. When the bearing seals start to fail, a small amount (at first) of anti freeze will begin seeping from the hole. If no weep hole, the fluid will pass around the pully shaft on a sealed pump. To check clean/dry off the housing well, dust with talcum powder and recheck after operating/sitting awhile. If its the pump, you should be able to see a path in the powder.

My original water pump lasted about 4 years before it began to seep. Had better luck with it's replacement.
