JD 2240 Runaway engine, resulted from return fuel hose getting disconnected

Approximately how long did engine over-speed and at what guesstimated rpm. Diesel pulling tractors exceed the factory recommended rpm's significantly. First thing I'd recommend is checking injectors instead of tearing down engine.. This is what a new JD injector costs but I'm almost some are available for less money.

TxJim, thanks. That's what I'll have them do, check the injectors first. To satisy my own curiosity though, I'll also ask them to do compression tests and find out if any good cylinders were left. I do not know how long the engine 'ran away' this time. My son in law was bush-hogging and I would not be surprized if he pannicked when he saw the enginne running away and just sat there until it stopped by itself. When the engine started to knock and then oversped a few years ago with me driving the tractor, I must have exceeded 4,000 RPM. It did no harm to itself that time and I continued to use the tractor for years. That time it also had started out pinging. I stopped bush-hogging and pushed the throttle to idle. And as far as I'm able to remeber, as soon as I stepped on the clutch pedal and shifted to neutral the engine ran away. When my son in law described to me what had happened, I was sure the same thing happened as before and told him not to worry. We took off the 'hood' and sure enough the fuel return line had slipped off again. :-(

If the injectors have been removed for testing it's easy to check compression if the tech has the correct fittings for that engine.

Good compression would be 350+ psi. Anything lower than 300 psi will be difficult to start in cold weather.
