As a matter of fact I did.. After all of the heavy lifting was done on the property and now it is a matter of general maintenance I got some quotes for lawn service to include every other week grass trimming from April thru November, fertilizing/weed killing 2x a year Spring and Fall, spreading 45 yds of mulch 1x a year, (optional driveway snow removal 3x a winter season), and the range was $6k-$8k per year.

And that was from 2 lawn services that would even do it.. The other 3 or 4 declined to even give a quote as the property was too tough for them.

But I just got good news, or so I think.. see next post...

Gentlemen,

From one of the forum members came the idea that what could be happening had to do with the 4wd/front axle which led me to do some further testing of the 2210....

Due to the tough terrain the 2210 has practically never been out of 4WD, and most of that time always in Lo gear...

So I thought, let me see what happens if I just put it in 2WD which would isolate some of the 4WD linkage and/or at least give me an indication if perhaps I broke a front axle or something..

Keeping in mind that I know I have good hydraulic pressure because the 210 loader arms work with no problem, the 54C MMM works perfect so I know at least the PTO and stuff works, and I can go forward but not reverse in both Hi and Lo gears.

So, I went out to the machine and put it into 2WD and it works perfectly!

I get forward, REVERSE, and the HST holds the machine as it should in 2WD.. No problems, no issues... When put into 4WD it does not go in reverse and behaves like before...

So, I finished mowing the turf where I could only be in 2WD... and it worked perfectly, even going down gentle grades/inclines the HST held the machine up both forward and backwards...

I drafted JD sales and service an email and fired it off to them, and actually talked to the Service Manager.. He said it sounds like a broken front axle..

(perhaps only some loose linkage?? But I will have to trust the JD dealer)

When in 4WD the machine acts like it is in 2WD and on the slopes that I was on with about a 35 degree incline the 2210s HST just couldnt hold the machine and once it started to gain speed even the brakes wouldnt grip...

So we all "win" (maybe) except for the JD salesman who can't now sell me a new or used tractor!

Gentlemen, I want to thank every single one of you for the help, interest and support you have freely offered to this hapless soul for without your suggestions I would have been lost!! Certainly alot poorer with a new machine that I really didnt need or want.

JD is scheduled to come and pick up the 2210 next week and if you would like I will let you all know the official outcome and cost...

Yes, I know it is not going to be cheap but at least it is not digging into a 2010 tranny trying to find what is broken all the while playing "if in doubt swap it out"... Unless of course it is only some 4wd linkage and then I will have to trust the JD dealer to do the right thing and not rip me off.

Most Kind Regards and Thanks again,

Mike

I can tell you you have to be in 4wd to mount the drive on decks if not all it does is push the deck around the 62d is very simple to mount drive over deck pull forward intill the hooks are in the bolts then push the spring pins in the holes then bring the bar up in the front finally crawl under the back of tractor and hook up pto no more than 5 minutes

Any chance we could get some pics of this property, I think it would give us a better idea of what your really up against

Have you ever looked into the line of Steiner tractors? They're supposedly designed to mow slopes like you describe on a regular basis.

OK I'll bite.

Someone explain to me why a scut can't survive living on hilly terrain?

I live in northern Pa which is nothing but steep terrain. I'm talking almost mt goat territory:laughing:

Everyone around here seems to own one.

I realize the dealer is full of crap. I'm curious if anyone can justify his comments....even remotely

On a side note isn't it usually a relief valve or something similar when one direction function but the other does not?

After living in Galeton for a couple of years (stationed there with PSP) I can certainly attest to the terrain! Mt. goats probably couldn't make it up certain areas! :)

Well Gentlemen...

After putting the 2210 up on its FEL to lift the front wheels off the ground I found the following:

When in 4WD the transmission does NOT lock the front wheel drive shaft, and the front wheels do not turn when in lo gear forward!!!

In fact when lo gear is engaged I can still manually turn the front wheels!!!

So - the linkage/rods of the 4WD MFWD are disconnected or broke turning the tractor into a 2WD machine.

The disconnected or broken linkage is jamming something which prevents me from going into reverse but lets me go forward when in 4WD.

2WD works perfectly...

So, it's STILL the tranny but at least now its isolated down to the 4WD linkage... The HST is sound, hydraulic pumps are sound with pressure, PTO is sound.. 4WD linkage/rods are not...

It may be worth my while to get a hitch put onto my Xterra borrow or rent a trailer and take the 2210 down to the dealer to get an estimate.. if I still get a run around then I can just move it back onto the trailer and take it to another JD dealer the next town over to get a 2nd opinion/estimate...

Some of you have asked for some pix of the property and I am providing four:
The 2 dimensional photos really don't show the steepness of the inclines but you can see the 4 concrete tiers and the 2 earthen tiers at the rear of the house with the top one being higher than the roof and I have shown a pic from that location as well. I also included a photo taken of my neighborhood ca Dec/1862 after the union troops captured it from the confederacy, my house sits in the middle of the second/third ridge in the photo.

Re's
